Haunted Tombstones and Burial Spots in Indiana

Indiana has a number of haunted cemeteries, but there are just as many headstones and individual burial plots that people love to talk about.

The Bass Lake Cemetery in Bass Lake has one particular tombstone that people fear. Stories claim that the grass near the tombstone turns the color of blood at night. The headstone also has the man's picture on it and when a flame is held near the picture, it changes. The face starts laughing, it grows horns, and a beard appears. Some people also claim that there's a wild creature in the area.

Brazil also has an old Indian burial ground where an Indian buried himself alive. People claim to hear the sounds of something chanting or hear drums beating and see his spirit. Captain Franks Tomb in Bridgeport is haunted by the man buried there. People sometimes see a light fog that seems to fit on top of the tomb.

Crane's cemetery has an odd headstone that seems to glow. Those who have seen it say that it stops glowing when you near it. The cemetery in Elnora has yet another tombstone that glows, but only on specific nights.

Fairmount is a fairly small town in Indiana, but it is the final resting place of legendary actor James Dean. At a spot near his grave people claim to feel someone watching them and feel someone tough them at midnight. No one knows if this is Dean or another person buried in the cemetery.

At a cemetery in Crawfordsville you'll find an old chair that was carved into a stump. A young mother had it created after losing her young son. At night the woman would sit there and sing songs or talk to her baby's grave. Locals found the woman dead a few months later, holding her child's body in her arms. There are stories of people hearing someone singing quietly and seeing a woman dressed in black. This same exact story is told about a cemetery in Iowa and one in Michigan.

An angel statue in Goshen's Oakridge Cemetery cries blood. The statue sits on top of the Michael Bashor headstone. Rensselaer, Indiana has a haunted statue in their Memory Gardens. The statue supposedly watches people and moves its arms and head.

Dan's Run in Henryville is where a man by the name of Daniel Guthrie was murdered and dumped in a shallow grave. Though his body was found, the grave is still open. People claim to see a man walking down the road and some believe he haunts some of the local houses. They hear someone walking in the hallways, hear someone whispering, and find strange footprints. There are also stories of things moving and doors opening or closing on their own.

Huron is home to one of the chain grave stories. Supposedly a local slave owner beat a slave to death with a chain. The slave's wife cursed the man and when he died, a strange chain appeared on his headstone. The chain continues to grow every year. This same exact story is told regarding a cemetery in Ohio and one in Kentucky.

Cinderella's Grave in New Mount Pleasant has an interesting grave in it. This cemetery has a small headstone with the name Cinderella sketch on the front, believed to be the name of the boy buried there. Legend claims that if you count the headstones at night, the number will change.

Then there's the Main Street Graveyard in Pendleton where people claim a local girl was possessed by the devil. A plant on top of her grave is rumored to resemble a pitchfork. Poland Cemetery has a similar story that people love to talk about. The boy buried there was possessed by the devil. His grave bears a picture of him and if you look closely, you can still see the horns poking out of his head.

The cemetery in Sellersburg has a tombstone that glows a bright green late at night. There are also stories of figures in black roads walking along the road and wandering through the cemetery.

Lastly there's Margaret's Grave in Woodburn. A young girl named Margaret was found hanging from a tree in her yard years ago. The little girl was buried underneath the tree and some people claim to hear her laughing and giggling there. People also claim to see her ghost in their rearview mirror and hear her inside a building down the street.

These are a few of the more popular legends and stories surrounding the haunted tombstones and burial places in Indiana.
