Hauntings: What is a Residual Haunting?

Ann-Marie Walker
It is 3 a.m. and your hearing those familiar disembodied footsteps walking down your hallway again. Every morning around the same time you are awaken to the sound of those same footsteps. If this type of activity sounds familiar to you, you might be experiencing a residual haunting. A residual haunting can best be explained as a movie or tape recorder, that keeps replaying the same scene or noise over and over again. The paranormal activity seems to always occur around the same time, same day, or even same month. It is like clock work. This type of activity is almost always signs of a residual haunting.

Never Interactive

A residual haunting is never interactive. This means if you are seeing an apparition gliding down your hallway and it does not appear to notice you, and takes the same course over and over again, it is residual. Nothing you do or say interrupts the apparition. It is as if you are not even there. Simply put, you are watching a scene from the past. Just like you can not stop the lady in the movie from running into the scary woods, you can not alter the course of your residual friend. What you are seeing is not actually a ghost or spirit. It is a play back of the past. A residual haunting is simply residual energy that is left over and imprinted into the surroundings.

Forms of A Residual Haunting

A residual haunting can involve several types of paranormal phenomena. It can present itself as a full blown apparition, footsteps, laughter, children playing and even sounds of doors opening. Any type of paranormal phenomena that happens as a routine, and is not interactive in any way can be a residual haunting.

Why Does A Residual Haunting Occur?

There is no set answer to why a residual haunting happens. There seems to be some evidence that a residual haunting occurs at a higher rate where limestone, quartz and or water are present in the surroundings. Traumatic events also seem to play a role in a residual haunting. Battle fields seem experience a great deal of this type of phenomena. There is a belief that extremely traumatic events, such as a battle, creates so much energy, that it leaves a psychic imprint. Other residual type haunting may occur simply because an event has taken place so many times. Footsteps walking down a hallway, apparitions walking down the stairs are notorious types of a residual haunting.

Do Not be Afraid

A True residual haunting might seem scary, but there is nothing to fear. So the next time you hear that same reoccurring sound, or see that same ghostly figure taking the same path down your stairs, pay attention. It really is interesting to wittiness a true haunting such a this. A residual haunting is harmless.
