Have You Considered Becoming a Substitute Teacher?

Paula Deason
Have you ever thought of becoming a substitute teacher? I often wondered about the people who filled in for teachers when they were not able to be at work. I found myself contemplating why anyone would want such a responsibility. I remember when I was in school, some of the students, ( of course not myself), gave the regular teacher a hard time and the substitute did not warrent anything better. Who in their right mind would subject themselves to anything like this?

Well, to answer that question, I would! I was certified a year ago to be a substitute teacher and I haven't looked back! I love being a part of the lives of the children and helping in their education. Believe it or not, some students feel more comfortable with a sub than with the regular teacher. I have subbed in the elementary, middle, high, and technical schools. The work is challenging, but not difficult. The teachers will leave detailed lesson plans to follow, but not to worry, it is usually book work or work sheets that need to be completed by the students.

I have a few teachers who call me when they need time off, which is great because I know they trust me to work with their students. Sometimes the behavior of the students is not what is expected and the teachers look to me to inform them of any behavior problems. Also, the administration of the school, such as the principal and assistant principle, are very supportive of substitutes. The most important thing to remember is that you are there as backup for the teacher and are expected to uphold the rules and regulations of the educational system.

I would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a substitute teacher to find out more about the requirements in your area. It is a great feeling when you go home in the afternoon and look back on your day, and with all honesty, feel great about what you accomplished! You will probably decide you like one age group more than another, but, to me, all of the age groups are unique in their own way!
