Have You Ever Taken a Popcorn Tour?

Lee Hansen

I just love indulging in a bowl of steamy hot popcorn. And if I choose to throw caution to the wind, I will occasionally have some delicious butter to top it off. Popcorn is big business. Moviegoers will almost always purchase a large container for their eating and viewing pleasure.

While reading the recent edition of KC Parent they quote, "This "All American" snack is so popular, we consume 54 quarts per person annually, according to Popcorn.org! Most of U.S. popcorn is grown in the Midwest (primarily Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri, with a few growers in Kansas as well)". Recently I was made aware of popcorn tours available to visitors

WHAT: Schlaegel's Homegrown Popcorn

WHERE: The farm of Gary and Marian Schlaegel

LOCATION: 31030 V Rd, Whiting, KS 66552 (2 hours northwest of Kansas City)

TO SCHEDULE A FREE TOUR: 1-800-844-7494

WEBSITE: www.PopcornGifts.net

HIGHLIGHTS:

The owners started raising popcorn 30 years ago. Presently 10 acres of farm land is dedicated to growing yellow and white popcorn. You'll not be bored because they have 30 flavors to choose from at their store.

While on tour you will see how this product is grown, prepared and packaged for selling purposes.

This would definitely be a unique way to spend a day. Perhaps they could divulge the secret of making sure every kernel is popped. Now why is it that I have a sudden urge for some right now?

Thats awesome! Something different to do... I have only been to a marshmallow factory, Jelly Belly factory, Ethel M's Chocolate factory, Ocean Spray factory, and Bush Beer factory... will have to add popcorn factory to bucket list!

My husband makes homemade popcorn and it is so good. We like to buy special kinds at farmer's markets and in Amish country. We like the smaller ones with hardly any hulls. Lady Fingers is a good one to try. If I lived closer, I'd check this out.
