Have a Fun and Enjoyable Winter with These Kid's Winter Activities

Marki E.
It's that time of year again. The kids are out of school for the holidays, it's too cold for outdoor activities and you haven't even made it through the first day of winter vacation. Before you pull all of your hair out trying to figure out how to entertain their overly active imaginations, try putting it too good use.

First of all, turn off the video games and put them away for awhile. Spending two weeks melting aliens or stealing cars isn't good use of a child's time. There is enough to do to keep their interest focused away from the games and still enjoy themselves.

During the last week at school before the winter break starts, have your child go to the school library and check out a few books to keep at home for the vacation. Or, load them up in the car and head to your local public library. Nothing passes the time faster, or as educationally, as reading a good book. You won't be able to keep them involved in reading the whole time they are off from school, though, so let's look at some other ways to keep them occupied.

Doing a quick Google search produces more than 800,000 results in "winter activities". Even the most selective of children should be able to find something constructive to do out of two million suggestions.

Online coloring and activities pages are an outstanding way of keeping the constructive juices flowing. With a box of crayons and some printed materials from one of the children's oriented websites, have them color their favorite winter pictures. Then, with a small bowl of vegetable oil and a brush, have them lightly paint the picture with the vegetable oil. As the oil soaks into the paper, it gives the piece of artwork a glossy texture and can be displayed in the living room windows as a festive decoration.

The websites also offer arts and craft projects that can be done at the kitchen table with some basics you have around the house or a quick stop at the local crafts store. Browse through one of the many websites available with your child and let him or her choose the craft project he or she would like to do. Gather the necessary materials for them and turn them loose. When one project is done, have them choose another. There are so many available, they'll run out of daylight before they run out of fun.

Another fun idea is to plan a family movie day. Nothing is more comfortable than curling up on the couch in a blanket when it's cold outside with a good movie and a bowl of hot popcorn. Take all of the children with you to the video store and let them each choose a movie or two. Or, better yet, plan ahead and subscribe to one of the online movie rental sites. For around twenty dollars a month, you can have a fresh movie to watch every day. After viewing one of them, put it back in it's return envelope and mail it back. The next movie you've chosen should be in your mailbox before you watch the others you have at home.

Children will, sooner or later, become restless with being trapped indoors. If the winter weather just won't allow too much outdoor activity, a trip to a local museum might be in order. Museum's are both an educational and inexpensive way of passing some time.

Push come to shove, a restaurant with a play land can be a good choice to let them work off some of their stored energy not to mention a great way of getting yourself out of the kitchen.

The winter school break doesn't have to be spent staring at a video game. With a little research and creativity, children and parents can keep themselves entertained without making each other crazy. There is certainly enough to do to keep your child occupied for their two week vacation if you put the effort into finding it. Try remembering what you enjoyed doing when you were that age. It will, more than likely, work with your child as well.
