Have Fun with Your Tomato Garden This Spring

Robbie Moon
If you are not having fun in your tomato garden, then you either need to rethink your hobby or possibly quit trying so hard. Gardening should be a stress free hobby where you can look forward to it everyday. When i go out to work in my garden, it is actually an escape from the everyday stress of life.

From the moment you begin preparing the soil you should be having fun. A tomato garden offers plenty of rewards through out the entire growing process. Start your seeds in doors and watch everyday for them to sprout, it doesn't take long in a warm atmosphere.Just before they are strong enough to transplant outdoors, take a few minutes and actually visualize where you are going to plant them and how they will look once they are fully bushed out.

Next comes the actual transplanting, pick the strongest plants and plant them towards the same end of your garden, this way you can see if the runts can catch up. I have had my largest seedlings end up being my smallest plants in the garden. Not that they are any less fruitful, just kinda neat to watch the small ones out run the larger ones. Now it's time to watch for that first bloom!

While monitoring your tomato garden for the first bloom of the season, take some relaxing time to add some compost to the soil around the plants. You can also actually enjoy weeding the garden as long as you do it a little at a time. Don't let the weeds go until it becomes a chore to pull them, get them when they first start, that way you will not feel overwhelmed. Once the blooms begin, make sure to watch for the suckers in between the main stems and pull those so the blooms can get all the nutrients.

FINALLY it's time for the fruit to begin! Once you have small tomatoes starting, then it's a blast to watch them everyday and see how fast they mature. Take the kids outside and let them pick which one they think will be ready first. Let them give the tomatoes names, that way they can keep up with them and they can tell you when they are turning and who knows, if you play your cards right, they may actually pull some weeds for you. After all they will not want anything hurting their tomato garden.
