Bus Tours
These types of tours are very planned. They tell you what kinds of clothes to bring and any extras you may need. You will know what you'll be eating and when you'll be stopping and where. They will drive you up to the door and let you out. Games will probably be played and you'll get to know many of your fellow travelers.
Taking the Train
In the Midwest we only have Amtrak. It is not always on time, so if you are going to Chicago and must be there at a given time, this may not be the way to travel. However, if you want a fun, leisurely trip and enjoy being with others and aimless site-seeing, this would be great for you. Also, if you have map problems, [you should have turned back there] a nice train ride could save a couple of arguments.
Flying
Flying is a quick [usually] way to go longer distances in a shorter time. You must plan to be at the airport early so you will be sure to make your flight. If you have disabilities, assistance is available. Sometimes you have a long layover or bad weather.
Flying also requires you to pack as lightly as possible. Heavy bags are costly these days. They say if you're the average traveler - you probably don't need everything you have folded and ready to pack.
Travel Agent or Online
Travel agents can be very helpful if you are unsure of what you're doing. Many people can easily go online and find destinations that will fit their wallet and their time frame.
Your Money
Carry your money as safely as possible. If two or more are traveling together, share your money so you won't be stranded if one gets robbed or loses their wallet. Credit cards are accepted most everywhere. However it's always wise to have some cash. If you must exchange currency, call your bank for the best information.
Always ID your luggage and parcels inside and out. Tie something bright on your luggage so you can easily be assured it is your luggage.
Your Home
Leave a light on - TV on if a short trip - tell your neighbors you're going. Stop newspapers and mail. Have someone keep your driveway clean in winter weather. Have a neighbor make walking and driving tracks in the snow.
Tell Someone You're Going
Emergencies do come up. You may need to know about something that happened at home - or they may need to contact you.
Have fun. Feel free to do something you've never done or want to do. You may never get the chance again.
