Have an Island Party with Wii Sports Resort

Video Game Review

Jennifer Amlie
Everyone who owns a Wii knows Wii Sports. The demo like game is still popular with players as it shows off the system's unique motion control capabilities. While it is fun, fans wanted more. This year, Nintendo delivered the sequel. Wii SportsResort takes the innovations of the original and adds more games and challenges. It retails for $49.99 and is rated E for everyone.

Review of Wii Sports Resort's motion control improvements
The game is bundled with one motion plus accessory. This add-on is used with the Wii remote to improve the way movement is tracked. The result is more precise control of your character. When you swing the Wii remote as a golf club, it takes more then just a flick of the wrist to drive that ball just right. This makes the games more challenging and closer to a real life experience. Some games like multiplayer Canoeing require each player to use their own remote and motion plus accessory. Additional motion plus add-ons can be purchased separately for $19.99 each.

Wii Sports Resort's new games and revamps review
The player drops from a plane onto tropical Wahu Island in the beginning of Wii Sports Resort. Then you are able to pick which of the 10 new or 2 updated games you want to play. Golf and Bowling are improved and updated. With Golf, the player is able to choose a full 18 hole course. I think this is fantastic, as golf is my favorite Wii Sports game. The motion plus shines on this one. The simple, but beautiful graphics are back and better then the original. Bowling is another favorite original game. I'm glad to see it in Wii Sports Resort. Besides the basic game, there are two unlockable activities. The first one features 100 pins, like the training activity in the original. The second activity, Spin Control, is about avoiding obstacles in the lanes.

Swordplay is one of the 10 new games. It features two unlockable activities and its loads of fun. From the duel mode to battling dozens of enemies at once, this game really stands out. Table Tennis is new, although it has its roots in Wii Play's table tennis type game. Table Tennis is a great improvement over the former game because the accuracy of the motion plus. Archery is very entertaining and challenging. The targets move farther and farther away and the player must adjust to the way the wind blows. Frisbee is another great new game with two modes of play. The first involves throwing the disc to a Mii-like dog. The second is an unlockable game that plays Frisbee within the rules of golf. Basketball starts out as a dunking game. As your score progresses, you can unlock a 3 on 3 game that is great fun. Will Sports Resort wouldn't be complete without water based sports. There are two watercraft type activities, Wakeboarding and Power Cruising. Wakeboarding lets the player complete tricks in order to get points. Power Cruising offers two fun challenges. Players can race the clock in an obstacle filled course or race another player.

I feel the two weakest games are Canoeing and Cycling. While the single player modes are fine, they don't have the excitement of the other games. The multiplayer modes can get very frustrating since the players need to work together. If one player is better then the other, it's difficult to finish the course.

Wii Sports Resort
is overall a very fun game. It's perfect for parties or spending quality time with the family. There are some minor disappointments with a few of the games. Since there are so many games to pick from, everyone is sure to find a favorite. So choose your Mii and start having a blast. This is the sequel every Wii fan should own.
