Have You Seen Thumbsucker Yet?

A Review of Mike Mills' New Movie

Tim Herzer
From first time director Mike Mills comes a funny "dramady" (Comedy and Drama) about the woes of a teenager named Justin Cobb who is still clinging to his childhood past-time of sucking on his thumb. This film has been widely talked about and anticipated since it's debut at the Sundance film festival and Berlin's Film Festival.

A couple of big names do appear in this film, despite it's indy approach. Vincent D'Onofrio plays the father of Justin, and he does a damn good job. He did a great job with this character, you can really see the frustration eating away at him watching his son continue to suck his thumb. Vince Vaughn makes a great coach for the high school's debate team. In fact he almost steals the whole movie away for himself.

He probably would've stolen the show, had it not been for Keanu Reeves' role as Justin's Orthodontist. By far the funniest character in the movie was Perry Lyman (played by Reeves). Keanu brings a dry sense of humor to this film, which goes with the overall feel and direction of this movie.

I could tell you more of the plot, but with a movie like this, the title really says it all. If you find the title intriguing, you will probably enjoy this movie. If you do not want to see a movie about a teenager who still sucks his thumb, go see a movie not named 'thumbsucker.'

Although the idea behind the movie was a really good book, this movie cannot sustain it's drive for the entire length of the movie. There are scenes left in the film that tend to drag it down, almost bringing the story to a dead hault. This is espcially evident near the end of the film, where it just wants to go on forever.

But with every movie comes flaws, it's only natural. This movie is no exception, but I would say the positives far outweigh the negatives. Also this is not a movie you should take young kids to due to the amount of drug-references in it. This movie is rated R for a reason.

Enjoy your night at the movies!
