Have Sex and Lose Weight?

A Steamy Lovemaking Session Can Burn 200 Calories!

Jan Peterson
Everyone knows that losing weight requires eating less and exercising more. So, can sex help a woman in regard to both? The answer appears to be yes!

Almost every woman has experienced losing weight after beginning a torrid love affair, right? The reason for this involves three things: the euphoric high that a new passionate relationship creates, a busier schedule that leaves little time for eating, and the thermogenic energy of all that body heat!

More Sex, Less Food?

Often the start of a new love affair involves fitting a relationship into an already hectic schedule. Somewhere between homework and laundry, kid's soccer practice and teacher nights, a 50-hour workweek and yard work, lovers must carve time for a budding romance and steamy trysts!

Often this busier schedule diverts attention away from the refrigerator, and toward preparation for a date or cuddling on the couch with that new love interest. Attention quickly shifts from boredom-filling activities like nibbling on popcorn, with more time spent on personal hygiene, changing the sheets and shopping for that perfect outfit!

Oprah.com's May 2009 article, "The Easier Way to Diet" by Martha Beck, supports this sex-over-food theory. Beck says, "If you've ever fallen in love, you probably did this (lose weight) by accident. In the throes of new romance, our beastie brain is focused on bonding and mating, not food. Emotional eating? Who needs it? Staying active? No problem! 'The pounds just melted off,' people say of their falling-in-love phase."

Is 'Sexercise' a Good Workout?

Kerry McCloskey is a research expert tuned model and television celebrity, who wrote a book about her newly launched diet program, called the Love Diet. She based her diet program on her belief that sex and passion are important ingredients for losing weight. An article on WebMD, "Get Sexual for Ultimate Weight Loss" by Denise Mann, tells us about McCloskey, "She lost 23 pounds in the six months after she got engaged, but it wasn't from stress. It was from sex -- lots of it!" On national television during a recent Oprah show, McClosky admitted this to be true. She said, ""My husband and I have sex about eight times per week. You do the math!"

The math McClosky spoke of referenced her research that indicates, on average, sexual activity burns 150 to 250 calories per half hour. She recommends:

>Thinking sexy thoughts and making sex a priority.
>Having sex three to five times per week.
> Toning exercises, including the "Elvis Pelvis."

Dr. Laura Berman, leading expert in women's health and sexuality and media guest on shows such as Oprah, Dr. Phil, and Dr. Oz, believes that, without a doubt, sex is good exercise. In Mann's article, Dr. Laura is quoted as saying, "It gets your heart rate up even if you are not having extremely acrobatic sex." And since short bursts of exercise can substitute for one longer workout, she puts her stamp of approval on counting one 15-20 minute "sexcapade" as a bona-fide exercise burst in the day's total workout plan!

The consensus is that sex encourages weight loss by releasing frustration and warding off loneliness which might otherwise result in stress pounds around the middle. And, as a side benefit, orgasm has been proven to be good cardiovascular activity!

So, girlfriend, it's true; falling in lust diminishes the appetite, and passion-driven exercise can help you lose weight. But most importantly, most people would agree that sex is one of the most pleasurable ways to rev up that metabolic engine and drop pounds! Go ahead: light the candles, dim the lights, play a little music then burn a few calories through some 'sexercise' with that hunky, new guy in your life.
