Having Dentures is Not the End of the World

Lee VanAmee
My article is actually pro-denture, and that is not always a popular stance. But my reasoning is not "if you have great teeth" go get dentures. My reasoning is dentures are a very viable answer, and a reasonable price tag for people who live in total agony of bad teeth, for whatever reason.

I have dentures and that is actually not all that common any more as it once was back in my parent's day. No one knows that I have them unless I tell them, because the science and dentistry has much improved over the years.

I had my teeth pulled and received my upper dentures when I was around 40 years old. The reason was the price, I had already spent thousands and thousands of dollars over the course of my life (with bad teeth, add every dollar you have given to every dentist and you will be very surprised, especially if you add in insurance and meds., etc.) after listening to some well meaning and (some who were just greedy) dentists convince me that dentures were the most horrible thing a human being could experience. Guess what, having horrible teeth and the work done was the worst thing I was going through. And on top of that, having to take out loans and come up with upfront money for every dental visit. Also, the work never stabilized, there were always more problems, and more work to be done. Part of my teeth problem was normal wear and tear and part was hereditary, but the other part was me being a sheep trusting the "doctors" thinking I had to keep getting this work done. The dentists literally refused to see me when I suggested pulling all of my teeth, every dentist I went to. (This story is actually not all that uncommon)

After I got my dentures and got used to the way they worked, etc., I was much relieved of the pain and agony and the thousands of dollars down the drain, literally. I wished it had been done 20 years before! Previous to this I was constantly told I was too young for dentures by every adamant dentist, even though every single tooth in my mouth was root canalled, capped, crowned, filled, glued, bonded, or gone. The price for implants were too steep by this time because I had already spent and took out loans for usually 5 thousand dollars a year, (after 5 yrs = 25 thousand) and I would have to start over again on the "restructuring of my mouth".

I would just like to share my story with some other folks out there who like me have gotten fed up with the fact that dentists can have you in a position to take advantage of you. So, think that over when you see that the estimate is being low balled and is still thousands of dollars and years of pain and agony, but no end in sight. I would hate for someone to go through what I did if they don't have to, because as I said before this story isn't all that uncommon I am finding out.
