Having a Family and Being in the Military

Kevin Nurmi
Many people who are interested in the military decide against it due to the harsh strain it can put on their family. Some people who are in the military will not start a family because they do not want their family to have to deal with the moving around all the time. Some people who are in the military and already have a family will leave the service in order to make things easier on their family. You may be in a situation that involves your family and the military and are deciding what the best decision would be.

Chances are if you have not joined the service yet because you want a family that you do not know about some of the great things the military can offer your family. More often then not, a military family does not have to be separated for very long. You can often move with your family to your next location. However, if you get deployed during a time of war, your family will likely have to live without you while you are gone. You can be deployed for various amounts of time, and these times away from home can be very stressful on everyone. If you have a young child a deployment can be a particularly rough time for a family.

Many people believe that a military family can be just as close and normal as a non-military family. It all depends on how you look at it. If you are always positive and upbeat about an abrupt change, you will teach your children to react the same way. It is suggested, however, that you attempt to get stationed in one area for a while when your child is entering his or her rougher teenage years and need a good support group of friends. Giving your child the chance to live in so many different places growing up can help them become more tolerant of the differences they find in people. This can help them develop as a person and as a mature individual.

If you have a family and want to give your children the chance to grow up living in one place for most of their childhood, you do have that possibility in the service. You usually have a say in whether or not you go to a different station. Sometimes it is necessary because your special skill is needed at a different base, or is no longer needed at the base you are at, but that is not something that normally happens. If you wish to stay in one general area for the sake of your family you usually have that option.

As you can see, having a family while being in the service is always a possibility. You may, however, choose not to have that kind of a lifestyle for your family. If everyone in the family is dedicated to each other and makes the success of the family their first priority there is no reason it would not work. All it takes is a little hard work, and a lot of love, and your military family will do just fine.
