First, make sure you have everything you need to house and care for the rabbit. You will need a cage if you are going to keep the rabbit inside, or a hutch if you are planning to keep the rabbit outside. Either way, be sure the home is large enough for the rabbit to run around in, as well as have shelter from noise or weather. Rabbits love to burrow and play, so be sure there is an area that the rabbit can go into to be by itself. You will also need to be sure you have some toys, including lots of objects to chew, available so the rabbit will not get bored. It is also very important that you have a food dish available. There are different types of food dishes, from a simple heavy bowl to a mounted feeder. You can choose which one best fits your rabbits needs. Also, you will need something for the rabbit to drink water from. The most common is a water bottle, with a weighted ball in the end to control the flow. The rabbit can lick the tip and get as much water as it wishes without having to worry about stepping in it or knocking it over.
Next, you will need to be sure you have plenty of food and treats available. Most rabbits do perfectly fine with simple alfalfa pellets, which can be purchased at most any grocery or pet store. Some prefer to give a mixed food of fresh vegetables along with the dry pellets. For treats, any type of fruit or vegetable will do. Rabbits love fresh food. There are also plenty of honey and nut or grain treats available. The best treat of all is attention from you.
The most important thing you must have when you invest in a rabbit is time. You will need to have time to spend petting and playing with your pet. Like any other animal, with time and attention, you will get an amazing companion and friend.
