Having a Unique Star Wars Wedding

Be Memorable Without Breaking the Bank

Morningstar
My husband is a huge Star Wars fan. After we got engaged, I knew I wanted to do something a bit different for our wedding. We definitely did not want to go the traditional, formal route. In fact, we got married by a judge in a private outdoor ceremony with just our closest family members. We were still planning a reception to occur at a later date, but since we were already married by then, we knew we wanted our reception to be a fun, casual party. The idea came to me that we should have a Star Wars themed reception!

I consider myself to be pretty creative and quirky, so I knew I'd have a lot of fun picking out details related to the Star Wars films. I focused on a few key aspects: decorations, favors, and food.

Decorations

I am very thrifty and we didn't have much money to spend anyway, so I tried my best to get some deals on our decorations. To start with, I borrowed some Star Wars memorabilia from a family member. She had some life-size cutouts of Luke and Leia, as well as a Star Wars tent, Jar Jar Binks bank, and other figurines which we placed throughout the reception hall.

For our "wishing well", where cards were to be placed, my husband and I made an R2-D2 out of a trash can.

Favors

I had roughly a year to plan for our reception, so that gave me a chance to shop after-holiday clearance sales. Fortunately there is always Star Wars merchandise at Halloween. I bought several Trick or Treat pails in the shape of Darth Vader's head, and I got lots of Halloween glow sticks. We used the Darth pails as centerpieces, filling them with cotton candy (more on that under "food"), and gave each guest a glow stick. The glow sticks just seemed to fit the "galaxy" theme.

The day before the reception, several family members helped me make light saber favors. We stuck a few pieces of candy to silver plastic knives, and wrapped them with wrapping paper. The handles of the knives remained visible, and we drew designs on with Sharpie markers, to resemble the light saber buttons. On each light saber, we tied a small thank-you note with our names, the date, and the message "May the Force Be With You."

Since we wanted to have fun, and since my husband's family is Mexican, we decided it would be neat to have piñatas. We found Darth Vader piñatas at the party store and stuffed them with candy and other small trinkets.

Food

Remember when I mentioned that I was quirky? Well my husband is just as quirky, and he jumped at the idea of having a breakfast buffet. We made out menu cards that described the dishes, relating them to the characters and storyline. For instance, ham became "Ham Solo", sausage links were "Jar Jar Links" and tater tots turned into "Vader Tots."

Also, in the Darth pail centerpieces, I stuck in tubs of cotton candy. I affixed labels to each, creating "Wookie Fur".

Finally, there was the cake. It was a traditional wedding cake, but on top, instead of a bride and groom figurine, there were Anakin and Padme figurines I purchased from Ebay. We cut our cake with a light saber!

I had a great time coming up with these unique details to have an out of the box wedding reception. Some people may want to have a traditional reception but I wanted something that fit my husband and my personalities. I will remember our Star Wars themed wedding reception forever!
