If it wasn't for the cross promotion of another CBS series making a guest appearance we wouldn't have known about "Shelbourne" on "Hawaii Five-0" This is the name discussed on the surveillance tape from the late Hawaiian Governor Pat Jameson's office. In the tape Steve McGarrett's father and Wo Fat are talking about Shelbourne. That is all Agent Kensi Blye, an expert lip reader, from "NCIS: Los Angeles" can read from the conversation. Otherwise, their backs are turned towards the camera. You can see this crucial scene at the start of episode 6 "Ka Hakaka Maikai" (The Good Fight).
Once again the name Shelbourne comes up prominently, this time from Wo Fat. In "Ki'ilua" (Deceiver) episode 10 featuring "Margaritaville" himself, Jimmy Buffet, in a cameo role, McGarrett's arch enemy is also in North Korea unbeknownst to the team. A former Five-0 compadre, Jenna Kaye, needs assistance in rescuing her boyfriend who is alive, or so everyone thinks. They all travel in a highly dangerous and completely illegal mission to this communist country. During the rescue McGarrett is captured by Wo Fat and his minions. Wo Fat is determined to get information on where Shelbourne is located from McGarrett. Even with tortious means McGarrett has no idea who's Shelbourne.
This leaves us to some odds and ends here and there from a recent to past episodes during season two. Why is Joe White, the now former Navy Seal who trained McGarrett, being evasive about Shelbourne? What really happened to the Japanese WWII veteran living in Oahu? He was part of the Pearl Harbor bombing, yet was seeking forgiveness with McGarrett's father. Why did Joe White go to Japan recently when McGarrett recovered White's passport and saw the current dated stamp? No doubt this is setting up for possible episodes on the mystery of Shelbourne. Hiro, the yakuza boss Joe White kidnapped, informed Steve McGarrett the name Shelbourne brings fear to Wo Fat.
According to the Five-0 Undercover blog created by Officer 808, a fan of the Hawaiian police procedural show and resident of the 50th state, viewers will at last find out who Mr. or Ms. Shelbourne is during episode 14, which is set to air in mid-January 2012. It almost sounds a little too good to be true. In the original "Hawaii Five-0" the character of Wo Fat lasted for nearly 12 seasons. Mostly likely we will get a nibble of Shelbourne, but not the entire course. Many other fan forums and blogs are alluding it could be McGarrett's mother.
