'Hawaii Five-0': Sunday Special Episode - Tsunami

Kai E 'e' or Mounting Sea in Hawaiian Refers to a Tsunami Threatening Hawaii

Sunday night shortly after the AFC Championship post-game filled with commentaries, festivities and interviews did we viewers finally see a special episode on a different night of "Hawaii Five-0." Why it wasn't on its regular Monday night line-up I don't know, but I wasn't complaining. Usually any primetime show following a championship game that leads to the Super Bowl or the Super Bowl game itself means it's in very good standing with that network. For instance the FOX network is airing the Super Bowl this year. One of its most popular shows, "Glee", will be on right after the Super Bowl on a special night. However, this episode of "Hawaii Five-0" dealt with a more pressing problem, a tsunami.

Hawaii "dodged a bullet" in 2010

In late February 2010 an actual tsunami threatened to strike the Hawaiian Islands as a result of the Chilean earthquake that measured 8.8. Shortly after the earthquake a tsunami warning was issued from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu. The State Civil Defense sirens got people out of their beds at 6 a.m. with a 14-hour window for evacuating. In the end it only resulted in wave surges and water rising to only three feet.

According to the Center's director he was quoted as saying "Hawaii had 'dodged a bullet.'" Needless to say the special Sunday night episode of "Hawaii Five-0" mirrored this real life event from nearly a year ago to the day. It was filled with everyone leaving the beach while Danno was getting surfing lessons from Kono. You saw the Hawaiian highways gridlocked with people seeking higher ground. People were stacking up shopping carts with food at supermarkets to ride out the wave. It reminded me a lot of the hurricane warnings and evacuations here in Florida.

Once upon a time in Hawaii

When I first saw the preview of this special episode and then its subsequent commercials on CBS I constantly would hear that sound effect of the State Civil Defense sirens. It always brought back memories of when I lived in Hawaii as a child. There were a number of occasions I heard those "tidal wave sirens." They sounded exactly like that on this episode. Back then they were called tidal waves, not tsunamis. The first time I heard it I was so scared, because I was outside playing in the yard I immediately ran in the house crying. My mom had to calm me down explaining it was just a drill for a tidal wave, not an actual one. After that the sirens went off a couple of more times. Then I never heard it again while living in Hawaii.

Finally we hear "Book em' Danno" and a surprise ending

The episode also had some twist and turns with the outcome of this tsunami. I won't give any spoilers, because it is worth watching. One thing I will say is the famous line from "Hawaii Five-0" was finally uttered after being absent for a couple of months. It was good hearing it once again. Remember the cliff-hanging episode where it went into hiatus for the holidays last year? It seemed to come partially full circle. Apparently the ransom money they used to save Chin Ho's life somehow magically reappeared in the HPD evidence room. Who put it there? My guess it was the Governor or it's most likely Wo Fat. I truly believe it's the latter. Now this show is really getting interesting. Aloha

Thank you for sharing this review. I watched after the game with my dad. I thought the show was done very well, and I liked the ending for a change. Leaves one to question who did what!

Good review of the program. I've only seen one episode of H5-0, makes me homesick just watching the opening credits.
It was kinda funny how the whole island shut down for that one particular tsunami - I guess because of the what happen in Thailand. We always said we could head for the mountains but then again if it's gonna hit, it's gonna hit. Everyone goes to the store to buy supplies cause of the delay in shipping or no electricity or water. People don't take it serious here in FL cause we can always go to another city or state - not so on the rock. Thanks again.
