Identification
The bride and groom must present two forms of valid identification when they apply for a Hawaii marriage license. Acceptable forms of identity include a birth certificate, U.S. passport, Armed Forces ID Card or a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) issued to alien residents.
Marriage License Application
A Hawaii marriage license is not accepted if it is posted or e-mailed. It must be completed in full and presented in person by the bride and groom when they see the marriage license agent. Once the application is made, the marriage license will be issued straightaway. The current fee for a Hawaii marriage license is $60.00, payable in cash. Once the marriage license has been issued, it is valid for 30 days and must only be used in the state of Hawaii for a marriage to be legal.
Age
Couples are permitted to marry at age 15, provided there is written approval to the union from the judge of the family court. Couples who are aged 18 and above do not require parental consent to marry, although they must be prepared to provide proof of their age at the time they apply for a marriage license.
Cousin Marriages
Cousins are allowed to marry in Hawaii, but the blood relationship between the bride and groom can be no closer than first cousins.
Where to Apply
Couples must apply to a marriage license agent for a marriage license that serves the island where they plan to marry. In Honolulu, apply in person at Room 101 of the Health Department building, 1250 Punchbowl Street, during office hours, which are from Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. For a complete list of phone numbers for marriage agents on the islands of Oahu, or the other islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai, click here.
Make sure you get your marriage off to a good start by applying for a marriage license and making all the necessary arrangements before you proceed any further. Bring along acceptable, valid forms of identification, have sufficient funds to cover the cost of the marriage license and ensure that you get married within the 30-day validity period.
