The 26th Annual Hawaiian Scottish Festival & Highland Games at Kapiolani Park in Honolulu Hawaii will continue Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM, April 1, 2007, Kapiolani Park in Honolulu.

Music includes "The Maui Celtic Pipes and Drums" Why is there a Hawaii tartan? Because there is a very good pipe band there who wanted their own tartan.

Scottish Heavy Athletics will include "The Hammer Throw"

The Scottish hammer has a total length not exceeding of 4'2". The weight of the light hammer is 16 pounds, and the heavy hammer weighs 22 pounds. Women: light hammer is #12, heavy hammer is #16.

The caber is more of a telephone pole than a log and the goal is to balance it vertically and then flipped over end, landing upside-down. This is not a distance throw.

The weight used for distance throwing is reminiscent of a mace. The "Weight for Distance" contest involves hurling a 28 lb. or 56 lb. weight as far as possible. With a combination of balance, rhythm, and power, this is often considered a graceful athletic event.

Most of the athletics were scheduled for Saturday, March 31. The games were Open Stone, Braemar Stone, Light Stone for Distance, Heavy Stone for Distance, Weight for Height and Caber.

On Sunday at 11 a.m. will be the Housewife Games, (throwing frying pans and rolling pins), and at 1 p.m. the Kilted Mile will be held.

For the history of Scots in Hawai'i, the following book is recommended, "The Story of Scots in Hawaii" published by 'The Caledonian Society of Hawaii',

Present at the Scottish festival Saturday were the "Society for Creative Anachronism", an non-profit educational organization dedicated to researching and recreation of the customs, combat, and courtesy of the Middle Ages. The group member build their own weapons, armor, and shields.

The demonstration is in an controlled environment with rules of conduct and overseen by the Marshal-in-Charge of all field violations such as unsafe or illegal weapon use.

SCA gatherings do not reenact a specific time nor place in history but "The Middle Ages as they should have been" without the bad smell of the unwashed masses scurrying amongst flea infested rats and sewage filled streets, (if want that then go to downtown Chinatown in Honolulu.)

Society for Creative Anachronism mailing address is POB 22473 Honolulu Hawaii 96823
