Last summer I did not tan. I repeat: Last summer I DID NOT TAN! I wear sunblock everyday. I wear 30 + in the summer and 15 SPF everyday in the winter. Though I am African American, I don't feel that I'm immune to the negative things that the sun can do to your skin. I've been reading about this since I was a little girl and have never felt that darker skin tones are immune to the dangers of the sun; even though many people have tried to convince me to believe that.
When I did a report on this when I was younger, one of the reference books I was reading showed the effects of sun exposure without sunblock on a Native American person whose skin was maybe 2 or 3 shades lighter than mine. The damage was just as visible as it would be on a lighter skinned person.
Like I stated before; I feel this must be a pretty decent sunblock to provide such good results last summer. I think it is important to mention that, I do not lay out in the sun very often either. I will do it and go swimming like once or twice a summer. If I want a tan, I will use a sunless tanner; unless I'm trying to treat my eczema. Then I will get a brief tan in a tanning salon or outside in the sun.
Though I've noticed that there are some sunblocks on the market now that go up to 50 SPF (and I plan to switch simply because of the SPF rating) this one has done me well so far. Those other products weren't available at my local stores for the past few years so I never had the choice of whether to use them or not.
One of the best things to note about this sunscreen is that it contains all three ingredients recommended for complete sun protection. This is important. Last year I found an unscented, non-greasy sunblock at my local health food store. It was 30 SPF and I was so excited to use it. Then I did some Internet research. More than a few sources state that for proper sun protection, an individual should use a sunblock with all 3 of the following ingredients:
Octocrylene
Oxybenzone
Avobenzone
So, as it stands; I don't plan to switch until I've found an odorless, non-greasy sunscreen that contains all of the above ingredients like the Hawaiian Tropic. The sunblock I found at the health food store only had one.
Until I find an odorless, non-greasy sunblock with all 3 ingredients, I'll just stick with Hawaiian Tropic; and move up to their 50 SPF product. They are recommended by the American Skin Cancer society and meet all the requirements for adequate sun protection.

Post a CommentI need something for the sun now, because it's officially summer as of last week!
Good info.
I agree, as I am dark too, and my forearms burn very easily. Color does not always reveal how sensitive one's skin may be. Thanks EUKY! Shalom from Neil
Great read!! You know it's funny I never had to use sunblock or thought I ever would until I went to the Islands. Oh my Gosh!!! I got sunburned sooooo bad, something I never want to experience again, and I had sunblock on, don't remeber what kind, but apparently it was not good enough..... Peace and God Bless!!!
