Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park

Water Park on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii

Janice Villa
Would you think that an island in Hawaii, surrounded by the ocean, would have a water park? Well neither did we, but they do! We were looking through some brochures to find an activity for the next day in Hawaii. We came across a listing for the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park. We wondered why? When there is a great big ocean surrounding the entire island, it just didn't make sense. So we decided to go and check it out. It wasn't too far from where we were staying in Waikiki. You just get on the H1 and head west to 400 Farrington Highway in Kapolei on the island of Oahu. If you have a car you can easily drive there in about 30 minutes. If you don't have a car you can take the public transportation called The Bus. They also have some prepaid packages that include the bus pass and the park ticket, you can purchase these from different travel stands in Waikiki. If you can purchase an Entertainment Book for the island of Hawaii, there are coupons for for the water park. If you look around in your hotel and on the street corners in Waikiki , you can also find books with coupons for the park. There are several categories for ticket prices. Adult, senior and children ages 3-11 years. Children 2 and under are free. You can also purchase an annual pass or get group discounts.

Once inside the water park, there is a locker section called Davey Jones Locker, available for a minimual fee. Put your belongings inside and take the key with you. This is very convenient and saves you from worrying about your things while you enjoy the water park. The first ride to do is the Cliffhanger! It looked a little scary from the bottom . It is a 6 story drop, free falling all the way. There were many young teens (none allowed if under 48" tall) enjoying the ride . It's not a small hill, it's a big steep climb to the top. There was quite a long wait in line. Before you begin the ride, you are instructed not to lift up your head, but lay back keeping your head down, cross your arms in front of you and keep your legs together. The water jets in front of you as you enter the top of the water slide. You hold on to the rail and gently sit down. After you get the okay from the bottom of the ride that the coast is clear you let go of the rail. Talk about feeling your stomach in your throat! You cannot see anything for the first few seconds of the ride. The tunnel at the top of the slide is all enclosed. All of a sudden the top disappears and all that you see before you is sky! You drop 6 stories! You feel like you are free falling. Soon you reach the bottom of the slide . A piece of advice~ before you stand up~adjust the bottom of your swim suit! If that free fall doesn't appeal to you , then try one of the other water slides. They are located towards the back of the park. Some are short slides and others have many twists and turns.

The park also has a Wave Pool. It is called Hurricane Bay. You have to wait for the okay from the lifeguard to enter the pool. You can choose to use a pink inner tube or you can try and body surf. It looks like any other pool at first site. As you wait for the whistle, you can position yourself towards the front of the pool in the deeper end for big waves or stay towards the back in the more shallow water. When the whistle blows the machine that controls the wave starts to move the water. Gentle at first and then before you know it the waves can be 2 to 4 feet high. You have to make sure to hold on to the handles in the tube. If you don't , you might end up under the water! The water returns to flat after the ride is over. You take the tubes back to the entry way and leave it for the next group of people.

If you are taking children, there are two separate play area just for families with kids. One is called the Keki Kove. They have their own water slides, water cannons, waterfalls and some obstacle courses. They can also go to the Waterworld Pool, where there are slides and activities for the whole family. There are lifeguards in the area at all times.

Other rides at this water park are the Waiane Coaster, The Big Kahuna, The Flying Hawaiian, and The Volcano Express. There is another ride called Da FlowRider. This ride requires a separate fee. This is a ride that simulates surfing or body surfing. You can purchase a one time ride or a multi pass for all day rides.

You can even book a birthday party or wedding at the water park. Call the water park for more information.

So the answer to "why" is there a water park on an island ~ because it's fun!
