Hazardous materials are those that can explode, burn, or do chemical harm to living things and property. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security describes these materials as corrosive, toxic, flammable, oxidizing. They come in the form of aerosol or compressed gas, in addition to liquid, solid and gel-like substances. These materials aren't always volatile on their own. Some of them only react when mixed with another substance, which can be an ordinary as air. They are concentrated or diluted. The chemical mixing, transport, storage and use of hazardous materials requires extensive training. The time spent isn't in vain. There are several jobs available for people with hazardous materials training.

Transport

HAZMAT is the abbreviation used to endorse a commercial driver's license to transport hazardous materials. Commonly called truck drivers and couriers, these jobs require knowledge of handling the materials while they are en route between destinations. HAZMAT training jobs in transportation are found in truck driving schools and universities with transportation programs. Companies also maintain HAZMAT trainers charged with teaching new drivers and maintaining the skills of the seasoned staff.

Inventory Control

Before, during and after their use in manufacturing, hazardous materials must be stored in inventory. Trainers in hazardous materials inventory control train specialist who will maintain the inventory. Located in universities, community colleges and within larger companies, these hazardous materials trainers teach the ins and outs of dangerous substances, from chemical makeup to handling and expiration. The trainers have backgrounds in chemical and industrial engineering to prepare for the position.

Compliance

These trainers work in government for organizations like the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They also train company workers and college students looking for work in the industrial engineering field. Compliance trainers are the people who prepare inspectors to go into the field to examine and enforce the hazardous materials compliance safety protocols. Inventory and materials specialists also take lessons from the compliance trainer as a requirement for completing their respective degree programs.

Disposal

Hazardous materials disposal trainers work in the government, universities, community colleges, and also corporation that handle the materials regularly. The trainers are also found in waste treatment facilities in both the public and private sectors. This hazardous material training job requires a background in chemistry, chemical engineering, industrial engineering and environmental engineering. Biology is also part of the degree plan. The trainer helps create the people who create, maintain and update a plan on proper disposal of hazardous materials. this includes preventive maintenance workers, waste disposal workers and others.
