HD Radio and Its Benefits

John Messina
Did you know that there was a study conducted in September 2007 by the radio market research and analysis firm to see how many radio listeners know about HD radio. Well 3 out of 4 (77%) are now aware of HD radio. Additional findings found 31% of radio listeners are interested in HD radio.

This study was conducted by telephone interviews across all age groups and sex demographics. Unlike on-line polls which tend to be less reliable this survey was carefully balanced.

As of 2007 there have been more than 1200 FM and AM stations that have adopted the HD Radio Technology. Most of the radio stations that have adopted the technology have been mainly FM stations while AM stations have been working slower towards this technology.

HD radio is the most significant breakthrough in radio broadcast since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago.

HD radio stations can now transmit CD quality sound while AM stations can now transmit FM quality sounds. You can now hear crystal clear audio without any distortion.

With HD radio you now have a choice of more channels to choose from. This means more music and talk shows as well as more detailed news and stock reports. It's just like having satellite radio but without any monthly subscription fee and even more.

Since HD radio is a free broadcast you can just go to an electronic store and pick one up for your home or car. You can also purchase them on line from any of your favorite on-line ordering centers.

Here are some of the real great benefits of HD radio and most of all they are all free.

You now can get scrolling text on your receiver's display like the artist's name, song title, game scores, stock quotes, real traffic updates and multicasting. Multicasting lets station broadcast multiple channels on the same frequency.

Now with multicasting one station can broadcast more music variety as well as talk shows, comedy and anything else they desire. With multicasting technology the air waves are no longer being cluttered. This is similar to Digital TV that will be transition next year in February.

Another cool technology for HD radio is called iTunes tagging. HD radio has recently teamed up with Apple iTunes so that listeners can tag songs heard on HD radio for future purchase from iTunes. When you tag a song, information about the song is transferred to your iPod and stored in a special playlist that allows you to download and buy it from the iTunes store.

If you want to learn more about HD radio just go to your favorite search engine and type in "HD radio" You will be amazed on the amount of information out there on HD radio.

One last thing, you can also listen to HD Radio on the web in crystal clear CD quality. So go to your favorite search engine and start enjoying HD Radio today.

Anyone who thinks HD radio = CD quality needs to have their ears examined. There's no way it's even close. Maybe "crappy itunes" quality wouldn't sell as well, but it's a heck of a lot closer to the truth!

I didn't know about this. It sounds great especially if you travel a lot. Excellent article. :-)

Maybe this is a dopey question, but how do you know if your particular favorite station is broadcast in hd? Is it something they advertise if they are? If they arent hd yet, will an hd receiver still pick up the signal? I mostly listen to only one station, and havent heard them mention it yet. I'm a bit slow I think...
