One night he got on his knees in total desperation. He prayed from the bottomless pit of pain that had now engulfed him. He screamed out from the endless black hole where his heart use to be for freedom. He asked the lord to set him free from the chamber of torment that he placed himself in with the reoccurring thoughts of her. He pleaded to be free from the chains of loneliness that shackled his hands and feet. Free me, he cried out from the innermost part of his soul, or bring her back to me. The agony from the very core of his being pierced the very walls of the house, sending a chill through the air. He cried himself into a deep sleep that night, but this time it was different. It was a peaceful sleep like no other, a stillness, and quietness like no other.
When he awoke the next morning something was different, something was new. He couldn't quite figure out what it was, but was compelled to walk down the trail, but for a different reason this time. Instead of going to await his love, he was going to say goodbye, for his spirit had been released. As he walked down the long winding trail, his walk was even different. For the first time he felt as though he was really walking toward something.
Suddenly, in the distance, he saw a faint figure, he couldn't quite make it out, for it was so far. Could it be, he thought to himself, would it be??? As he gravitated closer, long and behold, he realized it was his long awaited love.
They ran toward each other, embracing each other as if it were the last moment in eternity. She said, "I have been waiting for you", and he said, "and I for you". She began to tell him how she was always there with him. "I was always there waiting and crying with you trying to comfort and hold you, and although you couldn't see me, you always felt me, and that's why you kept returning".
When you cried out last night, your voice echoed throughout the universe, and all of the heavens heard it. It came from such a deep and pure place of love, that it surpassed all possibilities, bringing you to me, and I have awaited this moment forever so it seems. "Am I dead" he asked, "yes", she replied. You passed on to the beginning of your new life last night in your sleep. It didn't matter to him though, for he had already died to his physical self long ago when he first lost her. He gently caressed her face as if it were the first time seeing her, and kissed her softly as they disappeared into the morning sun rays together.

I knew it would be a surprise ending but I couldn't guess it. The tension built toward that ending was really nicely done.
