Under normal circumstances when a person is Not drinking they have this thing called the Super Ego, This is a part of the conscience that kind of keeps us all in check. In simple terms, it helps us to do the right thing. It keeps us from blurting out that someone is as ugly as a toad, so we don't hurt their feelings. Yes, it keeps some of our horrible true feelings from spilling out all over, and destroying the person in the path of our wrath. The Super Ego is a fine thing as long as it's active, and in good working order. It is said that people with good morals and values have a well functioning Super Ego. So, what happens to this wonderful part of our conscience when we drink?
What happens to the Super Ego when we drink is it becomes defective. It's not working at full throttle and that's when the foot in mouth disease begins. So many people want to believe that when their loved one is drunk that they didn't mean a thing they said. The reason is because what they say hurts. They don't ever want to believe that those horrible things they're thinking and saying about them are true. Unfortunately, they probably are. When the Super Ego isn't working up to par, out comes all the feelings they are harboring. Normally when we have terrible feelings or thoughts about someone, even people we love, this part of our conscience helps us to hold back and put it aside. After all we don't want to hurt someone we love just because we're angry and sometimes think things that aren't very nice. The Super Ego is definitely are friend. Unfortunately our friend goes on vacation when we drink.
Have you ever wondered why that calm, shy, bookworm ended up dancing on the tables half naked? We usually say that he lost his inhibitions. Well what he really lost was his Super Ego. Yes, we all have some secrets somewhere deep inside that is best kept to ourselves. Well, if you want to keep it to yourself, I suggest you don't drink too much. Chances are those few extra glasses of wine, could make for some very embarrassing and hurtful moments!
*Please be sensible when drinking during the holidays, and always. You might not only save a life, but also your dignity!
