He Stood in the Doorway

April Higney
He stood in the doorway,
peering outside, a young boy on a bicycle, alone in his ride.
Someone calling for him,
he pedals away, ignoring, behind an old brick building,
he decides to hide.

He stood in the doorway,
a teenage boy wolf whistles at a girl, as he walks down the street.
She casts an evil glare at him,
he smirks as he meets with defeat.

He stood in the doorway,
a young man stealing rims from tires.
Someone calling for him,
he runs to meet the group,
forgets his wants of future, many of his desires.

He stood in the doorway,
he cannot comprehend,
misguided, undirected,
seems this type of life could never end.

He stood in the doorway,
his face now shows the lines of age.
He cannot turn back time,
only in the present turn another page.

He stood in the doorway,
peering inside, a little girl sleeping in her bed, mommy at her side.
She whispers to him,
he moves toward her, listening,
he decides, in her he can confide.

They stood in the doorway,
peering outside, a small bicycle, together they'll take her out to ride.
Someone calling for them,
a tiny voice wanting mommy and daddy.
Together to greet her, they return inside.
