I find the product I recommend to people overall most is licorice extract, particularly for their adrenal health, which seems to be the most common issue I come across these days. People with high blood pressure should avoid licorice by most companies, however. The licorice extract I prefer is by NuNaturals Licorice DGL. NuNaturals is a solid company dedicated to using all natural ingredients and their licorice is specifically better for those who have the edema, for example, that comes with adrenal fatigue, and most people with adrenal fatigue have low rather than high blood pressure. Considering the ubiquitous stress in our modern lifestyle, nearly everyone could use support for adrenals. NuNaturals also has ginger extract, which tastes just as appealing, and can be combined in your regimen in creative ways.
Using NuNaturals Licorice, ginger, cinnamon, or hawthorn extracts can help people recover from adrenal symptoms of intense fatigue, blurred vision, insomnia, nightmares, shaking, anxiety, defensiveness, depression, poor memory, fogginess, infections, aches, and addictions. They are simple products, with alcohol, glycerine, and the herb, and that's it. Taking a squirt of it is pleasant, and something to look forward to, rather than a chore like tablets. It leaves a good taste in your mouth, and is satisfying. When you're relearning your habits to fix your adrenals, it helps to have something to look forward to instead of a cigarette, coffee, or chocolate, and these extracts can serve that purpose.
When deciding which brand of licorice extract to take, consider that NuNaturals DGL Licorice has reduced the glycyrrhizin, so you can take it whether you have edema and high blood pressure. However, if you are hoping to treat ulcers with licorice at the same time, this is not the best brand, as the glycyrrhetinic acid is useful against ulcers. You may also want to use a different brand if you are have hepatitis or cirrhosis, as the glycyrrhetinic acid works against them. On the other hand, if you want to keep all your testosterone, you will want to avoid glycyrrhizin and go with the NuNaturals brand.
While using extracts isn't all a person needs to do if he has severe adrenal issues, it's where I generally suggest people start, along with Royal Jelly, and as much as humanly possible, changing the habits that caused the adrenal fatigue to begin with. The brand of Royal Jelly I have come to trust is Royal Rlush. NuNaturals sweet little extracts and Royal Jelly are good for people who aren't used to the routine of popping little hard pills. They taste so good, you can give them to someone you care about who would never take pills, and he doesn't even have to know they're good for him, and might make him nice to you, and less lazy. And they are true foods, so instead of spending money for food plus supplements, you have something substantial you can enjoy in itself. It's not candy, but candy may be how you got where you are in the first place.
Some people might prefer to buy licorice sticks from the health food store. I'm not talking about the black candy (sugar and other additives are detrimental to the adrenals) but the root itself. They come in bulk in bins, or in bags, even in health food stores sometimes that have very little bulk offered. Put one or two of them in a moderate sized pot of water, and let it boil for 20 minutes before serving. You can make a large amount and drink it over the course of a day or two. The more often you drink the tea, a cup at a time during the day, the more your adrenals will be given the nourishment they need on a regular basis. While the flavor doesn't appeal to everyone, most people find it quite tasty, with a natural sweetener, such as stevia, xylitol,or agave, and maybe ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon as well. NuNaturals makes my favorite stevia, and Now makes a great xylitol, and Madhava a lovely raw agave. The spices can come from your spice cabinet, but I recommend using organic ones, or they will be irradiated. You can also put in a cinnamon stick to cook along with the licorice, or put a squirt of cinnamon extract, which is not common, other than that sold by NuNaturals, which tastes very good. Cooking ginger root along with the licorice, and/or cinnamon bark is fantastic for your adrenals, and tastes great. Adding rice milk, almond milk, or something similar can make it a real treat.
You can even just put a couple squirts of licorice, and a squirt of cinnamon extract into a glass of water, or ginger tea, and as they are sweet already, you are good to go unless you want to add a little extra something.
Royal Jelly comes straight up, or in honey, and can come with bee pollen and propalis. It tastes slightly odd if you're expecting it to be just like honey, but once you get used to it, it's like desert. You just take a spoonful, and savor it. Rather than taking adrenal supplement capsules and tablets, which many people don't enjoy doing, taking yummy food treats can be more digestible, easier to bring yourself to do regularly, and feel more like you're doing something luxurious for yourself. Learn to cook food that doesn't take you and drop you back down again, and save the sweet tooth for the Royal Jelly, teas sweetened naturally, and extracts, which are sweet without being problematic.
If you are up for more supplements, you can take asian ginseng, hawthorn berries, and other individual substances, such as DHEA, or take a formula made particularly for the adrenals. Avoiding allergens, like gluten and dairy, may be absolutely necessary for your body to recover, as they are extreme stresses on the adrenals. Avoiding sugar is always necessary. NuNaturals stevia is a good substitute as it isn't bitter like other forms of stevia.
While avoiding sugar, caffeine, late nights, stimulant drugs, and other things you've come to think of as fun might not appeal to you, if you are having kidney yang deficiency, the Chinese way of describing adrenal fatigue, you may be feeling pain in your lower back, feel your legs might give way, see your face in the mirror at times and be shocked by how white-white it is, and you be prone to candida overgrowth and estrogen dominance with swollen, knotty breasts and PMS. You may have to pee all the time, getting up all through the night, and you may feel twinges of pain in your ankles when you bend down because of edema. You may notice your tongue is swollen enough it is scalloped along the edges. Using supplements can definitely help those things, but unless you also avoid what you're doing to keep them going, you may find yourself unable to have any fun at all after awhile.
You'll do well to improve your adrenal health in other ways at the same time such as doing some reflexology in a spot above the center of your foot. If you are having adrenal fatigue, you will find a pinpoint of great pain. That's where you want to place the tip of your thumb and roll it across it.
Adrenals are part of the kidney meridian, and can be improved by Tantric retention of semen, in men. Ejaculations eventually are wearing on the energy of the kidney meridian, and learning techniques to have orgasms without ejaculation can leave men feeling much more stable, strong, enthusiastic, and alert. The meditative aspect of Tantra is very helpful in leveling out stress.
Doing something physical to express your emotions, rather than letting the energies bottle up, is good for the adrenals, though over exercise can be harmful. You can make sound, movement, dance, punch a pillow, paint. Massaging places lymph collects is useful as well, as it carries emotional charge. A common place for lymph to congest in response to emotions is the chest, in between the ribs, so milk that out. This is good to do in conjunction with looking into emotional patterns that keep you on edge, and the deep seated causes for them.
Why do you feel the need to stay up too late, work too hard, go into self- righteous outrage, console yourself with sweets, push yourself with caffeine or other drugs, prove to others you are invincible, go out with dangerous people, take risks driving, give too much of yourself, let other people's feelings about you take too much much precedence, obsessively worry over abandonment, or whatever it is that is your particular imbalanced behavior that leads you to avoid listening to your body's signals. Maybe it's just the social pressures of looking perfect, making enough money survive, or a stressful family you can't get away from. Dealing with the core issues is easier when you're taking licorice extract or something, as it lets you look at it more rationally. But the extracts in themselves will be necessary your whole life unless you deal with the underlying cause of adrenal fatigue.
As you avoid stimulants and pushing yourself too hard, take supplements, stay away from allergens, physically express, do reflexology and Tantra, you should start to see your sensitivities improve, be able to face doing chores you'd normally procrastinate on, get over palpitations, have a rise in blood sugar and blood pressure, so you don't feel lightheaded when standing suddenly, and if your thyroid hasn't been too compromised, your temperature may go up. Your digestion should improve, and taking HCL can help that. Your outlook on life may feel much lightened instead of light headed, and you can get enthusiastic without going overboard as an addictive stimulant in itself. Your eyes may be able to focus better, vertigo can be improved, and you may start to really feel like yourself. And you may find your taste buds have changed from craving unhealthy foods for the adrenalin rush of it to liking healthy foods that help you avoid the head rush when you stand up.
