Headache Relief: New Tylenol GoTabsTM

Laura Spencer
Since one of our family members can't swallow pills, I was glad see Tylenol's new GoTabsTM product. It has been hard for us to find headache relief that doesn't require you to swallow a capsule or a tablet. Tylenol® GoTabsTM solved that problem for us because they are chewable.

Convenient

Tylenol markets this product as headache relief for people on the go. There's no doubt that it is convenient. It comes in a flat box that is roughly ¾ of the size of a checkbook. A box of GoTabsTM easily fits in a purse, jacket pocket, or desk drawer. It also fits nicely into the glove compartment of an automobile.

Taste the Pain Relief

The pale green, chewable GoTabsTM tablets currently come in only one flavor: Spearmint Ice. In my opinion, the Spearmint Ice flavor is just barely strong enough to cover the fact that this is medicine that you are taking and not an after dinner mint. However, the barely tolerable taste could be a good thing since it might keep kids from getting into the product and eating it like candy.

I could not tell the difference between the headache relief provided by Tylenol® GoTabsTM and ordinary Tylenol® capsules. So, if Tylenol® usually works for you, then this product should also work for you. The active ingredient, acetaminophen, is the same. The box indicates that it can also be used to relieve pain from backaches, the common cold, muscular aches, premenstrual and menstrual cramps, and the flu. It will also temporarily reduce a fever.

Caution With Children

This product is not designed for children. The box clearly states that should not be given to children under 12 years of age because a tablet contains more than the recommended dosage for a child and may cause liver damage. An additional caution is warranted because the package is not in child-safe packaging. Most children could easily open the cardboard box, peel the paper backing from behind the tablets, and get into this medication. If you have small children, be extra careful to keep this (and all other) medication out of their reach.

Other Warnings

The box also contains warnings against using the product in the following circumstances: when you have consumed alcohol, in combination with other products containing acetaminophen (check your cold medications), if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and other than directed.

Conclusion

A box of Tylenol® GoTabsTM seems to be available for between a dollar and two dollars at stores near me. However, one box only contains six chewable tablets. Since the recommended dosage for an adult is two tablets, this means that each box only contains only three adult doses! This is a little bit expensive according my usual standards. However, as I said earlier, we have a family member who will absolutely not swallow pills. That fact makes this product a necessity for headache relief for that individual. So far, we have been lucky to find coupons and sales. We will definitely be buying the product again.
