Headaches

Types, Cause and Treatment

Pat Lunsford
Everyone has experienced a headache at one time or another, but there are many who suffer them quite frequently and have no idea why. There are a number of things that can trigger a headache such as sleep deprivation, severe stress, and eating disorders. Furthermore, there are different types of headaches which include cluster headaches, sinus headaches, and the dreadful migraine. Therefore, in order to achieve headache relief, you must first define the cause and type.

Stress is the most common cause of most headaches which makes your head feel like it is in a vise-grip. Treating the pain with a good over-the-counter pain reliever is typically an effective cure for a stress headache. However, stress-anxiety leads to much more serious symptoms so it is important that you evaluate your stress level and practice stress management.

Sinus problems are another common cause of headaches. Allergy sufferers are often plagued by the bothersome sinus headache where pressure builds up around the sinuses cavities. There are many products available on the market for sinus and allergy problems such as nasal sprays and supplements which can bring you headache relief. Chronic sinus headaches suggest infection and require medical attention.

Many headaches are caused by simple eye strain due to things such as driving at night for long periods of time or excessive reading. Perhaps you have a vision problem, in which case, a visit to a vision specialist is in order.

Sleep deprivation is a definite cause of headaches. We have all suffered from lack of sleep at one time or another and have also felt the effects of the headaches it can cause. Still, if you suffer from chronic insomnia, a pain reliever can ease the pain, but an effective cure for a headache of this nature requires attention to your insomnia problem. Consult with your physician for the best method of dealing with insomnia as it can lead to a number of other disorders.

An empty stomach is a well-known cause of headaches. Also, overeating can burden the gallbladder which can cause a splitting headache. The most effective cure for a headache such as this is quite obvious. Fill an empty stomach and lose the headache. For an excessively full stomach, a good pain reliever, taken with seltzer will help the food digest as the pain reliever gives you headache relief.

Cluster headaches are frequent episodes of headaches which come and go for several weeks. While there are many possible causes, sensitivity to alcohol is the most common. Oxygen has been proven a very effective cure for cluster headaches. Certain drugs such as Lidocaine and prednisone have shown to be very effective.

The dreadful migraine can be a nightmarish experience which is frequently accompanied by nausea and vomiting along with extreme sensitivity to light and sound. The key to headache relief from a migraine is to treat it from the very onset as they can escalate quickly. There are a number of possible causes from a hormone imbalance to food sensitivities.

Taking a pain reliever and retiring to a quiet, dimly lit room can be quite effective in staving off a migraine. Pethidine injections are commonly used to treat severe migraine headaches. Acupressure has also been proven to be very effective against migraines. Simply pressing and massaging the painful areas can go a long way in reducing the pain.

In summary, the most effective cure for a headache is to correctly identify the source and type. For headache relief, most over-the-counter pain medications work well. However, getting to the source of the headache is the key to treatment.

Migraine headaches should be treated at the very first sign of pain to effectually control them. Chronic headaches are indicative of possible underlying conditions. If you suffer headaches frequently for any length of time, you should consult a physician.

The Great Physician (Jesus Christ) can lead you down the road to recovery and all you have to do is ask. He suffered then just as we suffer today, yet He was without sin. He knows exactly what we are going through and is willing to help, but we have a will of our own.

"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Heb. 4:15)

"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (1Peter 5:7)
