Do you know how hard it is to find a good haircutter for my two year old son? I have tried so many hair salons, barbershops, etc...and have not been satisfied with any of them. For his first haircut, my husband and I took him to one of those "first haircut" specialty salons. It was cute in theory, but he was too young to sit in the cartoon chairs and ended up sitting on my lap the whole time. The haircut was done well, and the haircutter was good, but the place is 45 minutes away from my house. Who is going to drive 45 minutes every time your child needs a 5 minute haircut?

So then, we started trying barbershops. Those worked well for a while, but unfortunately, the barbers weren't that good with little kids. Once my son started acting up because he was scared, the barbers didn't know how to soothe him into sitting still. I know that isn't there job but there is a way to talk to kids to calm them down and they didn't do that. One woman was actually so nasty that I almost stopped the haircut halfway through. I swore I would never go back after that horrible experience.

I was telling a friend about my frustration about how hard it was to find someone to cut my son's hair, and she recommended a salon called "Headcutters" in Mastic, New York. I live in East Moriches so it was only 10 minutes away from my house. I figured I would give it a shot. I didn't even call to make an appointment I just walked right in.

The first haircut my son got at Headcutters was ok but I wasn't happy with the woman who cut it. She was talking to someone else the whole time and my son was starting to lose his patience. I don't think she talked to my son or me at all. The whole haircut took 5 minutes, which was great, but I decided that I wouldn't use her again. When I told my friend about my experience there, she told me I should request a woman named "Rita." She said the Rita was wonderful and her son always enjoys getting his haircut by her.

This time I was smart and called for an appointment with Rita. I was brave and I took my son all by myself. I didn't bring my husband with me, which I usually do. I thought that maybe he would be better if my husband wasn't there. When Rita called us to her chair, I knew this was going to be a good experience for both my son and myself. Rita was great with my son. She gave him a cape with all different cartoon characters on it and really bright colors. She started talking to him in all different funny high pitched voices. My son was loving her up. Then she started with the buzzers. First, she showed him the buzzers and demonstrated how they worked and how they didn't hurt. He actually let her start buzzing his head. I was in shock. My son was sitting so well for her. When he did start fussing around, she started singing to him. My friend told me that Rita was in a band and that she sings to the kids. This worked great. My son sat through the entire haircut without crying once. It was a miracle. Usually my son starts crying within the first 5 minutes of the buzzing starting.

Then we were done. Not only did she keep my son from crying, she also gave him a great haircut. I actually can't wait until he needs another one because our experience with Rita was that good. She gave him a lollipop before we left and the haircut only cost me $8. I gave Rita a $5 tip because I have never seen my son so calm getting a haircut before. I called my husband as soon as we got back in the car and told him all about Rita and our wonderful experience.

If you live near the Mastic area, I would highly suggest going to Headcutters hair salon. Just make sure you call ahead and make an appointment with Rita. You won't be sorry. You can call to find out where their might be a location closer to your local town.
