Healing with Crystals: Alexandrite

Alexandrite, named after the Russian tsar Alexander II (1818-1881), is a very rare stone that is scarcely used in the making of modern jewelry. The first crystals were discovered in emerald mines on the Tokovaya River in the Urals in April 1834. Russia is the primary source of Alexandrite but it has more recently also been found in India, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Tanzania, Tasmania, United States, Myanmar and Madagascar. Because natural Alexandrite is so rare most of what is found on the market is synthetic and very expensive. Gemstones that are accredited as being Russian in origin are normally higher in value.

Alexandrite was treasured by Russian nobles and royalty and was considered to b a good luck charm. It shows the colors of a vivid bluish-green during daylight and a purplish-red in incandescent light. Because Imperial Russia's primary colors were red and green it naturally became the national stone of tsarist Russia. The most remarkable characteristic of this stone is its ability to change color. The more distinct the changes in color, the more valuable the stone is. Alexandrite crystals are usually shaped in a threadlike manner and are either transparent or opaque. The chemical properties of a true synthetic stone are the same as those found in a natural gemstone.
