Healing with Crystals: Apatite

The name apatite originates from the Greek word 'apate' for 'cheat' or 'to deceive.' It acquired this name because it was often mistaken for other precious stones. It is rarely used in the making of jewelry because of it's softness but is valued by collectors for it variety in color and form. The value of apatite, like most other gemstones, increases with the saturation and intensity of it's color.

This mineral crystallizes as compact masses or prismatic crystals. Although it usually produces yellow to yellow-green crystals it falls into a wide range of colors including, white, yellow, green, violet, deep blue, pink, purple, brown, red-brown, or colorless. It is a transparent gemstone.

Apatite is found in Brazil, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Myanmar (Burma), Mexico, Norway, and the United States. The color variety of apatite that is purple is the rarest form of the stone and is found in the state of Maine in the United States; specimens from Brazil are second most in demand. Those stones that come from Madagascar are neon blue-green in color and are the variety that are most commonly used in the making of jewelry.
