Healing with Crystals: Barite

Dimpel Nagin Patel
Barite, also known as "heavy spar," is the main source of the heavy metal barium. Its name derives from the Greek word "barus" meaning "heavy." It frequently occurs in limestone, hot spring deposits, and with hematite ore. The range of colors for barite includes blue, white, grey, yellow, brown, and a brownish-rose. It is transparent to translucent to opaque. It is sometimes multi-colored and banded with stripes.

According to the legends of the Native American religion, it is said that Indian warriors, who had progressed from the physical world to the spiritual realm, reappeared at night and carved the barite roses. These carved roses were spread about so that those on the physical dimension would not know where the warriors had gathered.

Barite comes from a number of areas including Italy, Morocco, England, Australia, Belgium, South Africa, and the United States (Arizona, Oklahoma, and Nevada). It is used in the manufacture of paper, glass, and rubber and is also utilized in radiology for x-rays of the digestive system. This mineral crystallizes in several different forms including:

-Tabular: Flat, tough, four sided crystal.

-Stalactitic: Icicle-like formations.

-Fibrous: Fine, parallel threads; some fibrous formations are flexible and can be bent around.

-Rosette Aggregate: A grouping or cluster of crystals that markedly resemble roses.

-Plate-Like Masses: Small, flat, and flaky crystals.
