Healing with Crystals: Bornite

Bornite has been called the "stone of happiness" as it suggests that life really is something joyful to experience. It is a sulfide mineral that is also known as "peacock copper" or "blushing copper" to express its iridescent tarnish. This iridescent tarnish enhances the reddish-brown color of the crystal. It is also produces a variety of other colors including brown to black, purple, yellow, turquoise, blue and rose, with all specimens containing a metallic shine. It was named after the Austrian meteorologist Ignaz von Born (1742 - 1991).

Bornite is one of the more common minerals and is found in a wide range of localities. The larger crystals are found in Cornwall, England. In its massive form (meaning it has no particular shape) it is found in the United States in Arizona, Montana (smaller crystals), Connecticut, Alaska (Copper River District), and Pennsylvania (French Creek Mines). It is also mined in Kazakhstan, Peru, Chile, Tasmania, Bolivia, Mexico and British Columbia and Quebec, Canada.

It crystallizes in masses and sometimes in the form of cubic rhombdodecahedral crystals, having twelve faces, each of which are in the shape of a rhombus. This mineral is most important for its copper content with each specimen containing approximately 63 percent copper.

-Useful in reducing fevers and swelling.

-Promotes rehydration of the body.

-Effective in balancing the pH of the body; increases alkalinity when there is an over-acidic state in the body and increases acidity when there is an over-alkaline state in the body.

-Used in the treatment of convulsive type disorders.

-Stabilizes the absorption and preservation of sodium in the body.
