Healing with Crystals: Cacoxenite

Dimpel Nagin Patel
The name cacoxenite derives from the Greek for "bad guest." This is due to the fact that its phosphorous content decreases the quality of iron that comes from the host stone containing it. It is a mineral that is normally an inclusion found in quartz crystals and especially in amethyst. It is considered to be less valuable than other minerals and generally ruins the chances for its host stone to become a gemstone, but because the occurrence of cacoxenite in its natural form is so rare it is still valued in the making of jewelry and other showpieces.

The crystal system for cacoxenite is hexagonal meaning that it has four axes, three of which are the same in length and the fourth is either longer or shorter than the other three. The structure or form of this mineral occurs in several different ways including:

Indistinct Pyramid: Having the shape of a pyramid with a top that is pointy.

Randomly Fibrous: Composed of fine threads that are parallel to each other; some fibrous specimens have a cloth-like plasticity, allowing them to be bent around and giving them the feeling of cotton.

Radiating Tufts: Made up of small, thin crystals that are compressed together and radiate from a central point; the radiation can either be three-dimensional or flat in form.

The color of cacoxenite ranges from yellow, yellow-brown, brown, reddish-yellow, to greenish-yellow with its radiance being transparent to translucent. This mineral can be found throughout the continent of Europe in countries including England, Ireland (Limerick), Sweden, France, Germany, Belgium (Antwerp), and the Czech Republic. In the Americas it is found mainly in Northern America in states including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, and New York.
