Healing with Crystals: Calcite

Calcite, known as the teacher for all of mankind, is one of the most commonly distributed minerals on the earth. It is a polymorphous carbonate mineral, meaning that its chemical composition is the same but its crystals can have different structures. Over six hundred unique crystal formations of this mineral have been identified. Varieties of calcite include limestone, chalk and marble. It is common in the shells of invertebrate marine organisms including clams, oysters and the harder parts of red algae. Calcite is also used in many general household products including toothpaste, chewing gum, glue, antacids and soap.

Calcite crystallizes in various forms including:

-Masses: minerals that have no particular shape.

-Grains: a grouping of crystals that resembles a cluster.

-Fibrous: made up of delicate, parallel threads that are bendable; they may also have a cloth-like elasticity and feel like cotton.

-Earthy: a tendency of the stone to fall apart when put under pressure.

-Twinning: a crystals inclination to inter-grow in a specific way or create precise, repeated patterns.

-Stalactites: a type of mineral that hangs from the ceiling or walls of limestone caves; from the Greek stalaktites, meaning "that which drips."

-Stalagmites: a type of mineral that rises from the floor of limestone caves due to calcium carbonate deposits; from the Greek for stalagma, meaning "to drop or drip."

-Scalenohedrons: twelve-faced crystals with each face having three unequal sides; this is the most common form of calcite.

-Rhombohedrons: six-faced crystals with each face having the shape of a rhombus.

Calcite is generally colorless or white but can change its color when it is mixed with other compounds during the time of its development. Some of these colors include red, peach, orange, yellow, pink, golden, green, grey, and black.

This mineral also has a wide range of localities. Some of the more significant areas include Iceland, large parts of Mexico, Brazil, India (in the Bombay area), England, Germany (Andreasburg and Saxony area), and in the United States in New Jersey, New York, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Ohio.

Metaphysical Properties of Calcite

-Useful in helping the mind to remember the information learned during astral travel, also known as the "gift of flight." By allowing the body to remember this information one can come back to that natural place where they can experience a "state of perfection" during disease.

-When the corresponding color of calcite is used upon the appropriate chakra it helps to clear and activate that specific chakra.

-A valuable stone to one who is studying the arts and the sciences.

-Using the different colors of calcite on the body helps to create a strengthening of one's energy field.

-Creates a prismatic energy to clear and activate all of the chakras in the body.

-Clear and gold calcite are very powerful energy sources when used at the crown chakra.

Healing Properties of Calcite

-Can be used in the treatment of diseases that are related to inadequate functioning of the kidneys, pancreas, and spleen.

-Used in conjunction with quartz it can help to get rid of candida infection in the body.

-Encourages the de-calcification of bone growths.

-Helps the body to absorb calcium more efficiently.
