The first suggestion is to write a letter to your deceased pet. The letter can be any length and can be about anything you feel like writing. The best thing to do is just pick up the pen and write whatever comes to mind. If there are special things that you would like to say, you can add those.
I lost a cat about 14 years ago and I had a hard time healing from the grief. I felt guilty about his death and that guilt just wouldn't go away. One day I wrote him a letter telling him how much I had loved him and how I missed him. I really felt like I connected with him when I wrote that letter and I felt some healing as a result.
I've also written a couple of letters to my cat, Kirby, who recently passed away. The first letter was written on the day he died and was 20 pages long. I wrote about many of my memories of him throughout the years and about how much I cared for him. It is a special letter that I will cherish forever.

I think the best things in life are free - like love, friendships, hanging out with my cat(s), taking pictures, going for walks. I love animals, nature, green living, personal growth, and writing/journaling. View profile

Post a CommentI found a web site that lets you write letters and share with family and friends. It was by a person who lost her dog:

It has some touching letters on it too.
I've done this when I've lost people who are dear to me, but never thought to do it for a pet. I'm sure it would be very therapeutic as well... a great idea! :)
I'm glad that writing helped you to deal with your grief, Sharon. Losing a pet causes so much pain. It doesn't just go away.

We just lost our baby Bootsie. We had her for 15 years. She lived with my mom. But she was all of our babies. I know a day won't go by without us thinking about her. Thank you for your idea.
I think just about everyone can relate to this topic... I miss our cat that passed away last October. Some days, I am still pretty mad that he died so young of cancer. I think we all wish we could have just one more time to give them snuggles and pets.
We just lost our 8 year old cat Bethany last month. Thanks for the great tips!
;-)
I can see where this would be very therapeutic ... not only for pets who have passed but for loved ones as well.
