Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Blake Duong
Many folk remedies made from fruits and vegetables have been used for thousands of years, dating to ancient civilizations and historical cultures. Some disappear for a time, only to resurface in a slightly modified format to become more popular than ever. Such is the case regarding purported health benefits of apple cider vinegar. Apples are one of the oldest known fruits on the face of the earth, and they have been used for everything from decorations to food and medicine. Admired for antibacterial properties, soothing skin relief, and digestive treatment, apples and their offspring products continue to be a much sought-after remedy in the realm of natural health treatments and cures.

The health benefits of apple cider vinegar are manifold. Weight loss enthusiasts claim that one to three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar before each meal can reduce the appetite, burn unwanted calories, and rid the body of harmful substances like cholesterol. Some scientists and doctors remain skeptical, believing that there is little evidence to support the notion of apple cider vinegar's weight loss benefits.

Other health benefits of apple cider vinegar include its pectin, which allegedly provides a fiber filler that helps to keep the digestive tract working properly. An array of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes have been attributed to apple cider vinegar's ability to cure or treat diseases like arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems, and cholesterol imbalances. Yet science has not caught up to folklore in proving conclusively that the properties associated with apple cider vinegar are indeed valid in treating the diseases ascribed to them.

The acidic base of any vinegar may contribute some of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar, although the results will vary from product to product and person to person. Anyone who is thinking of taking the vinegar from a teaspoon before meals or in tablet form should first check with the doctor to make sure it is safe for them to do so. Supposedly, uses for apple cider vinegar apply safely to children as well, but a doctor should confirm this before giving it to young ones.

Although many people believe in the benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar each day to help with a variety of ills, there is little consistency or standardization in the way the product is distilled, prepared, or taken, except for the recommended one to three teaspoons before each meal. If you buy the tablet or bottled product, read the label or package to find out exactly what it contains. Beware of added substances about which you may know little. Simple cider vinegar is one thing, but cider vinegar with added products may have another effect on your body altogether.

The health benefits of apple cider vinegar have been written about and published in several books and articles. Read these at your local library or the bookstore. You also can find helpful information on the Internet that will help you make an informed decision about whether, and how, to use this product.
