Health Benefits of Broccoli

Broccoli can help your overall body health in many different ways. To begin with, it is strong in vitamins A, C and K. Vitamins A and C are both antioxidants, and antioxidants have an extremely diverse affect on your health, and can improve everything from eyesight to metabolism to your immune system.

Vitamin C is especially helpful for the immune system and can help you prevent sickness while recovering from sicknesses quicker. Vitamin K plays several crucial roles within your body, including aiding in the clotting of blood. Antioxidants as a whole have also been shown to be able to reduce or prevent certain types of cancers as well as other serious and long term illnesses.

Additionally, broccoli has a good deal of fiber. Fiber can help lower bad cholesterol in your body. It also of course aids in the proper digestion and absorption of food and helps to regulate your body's digestive cycles and processes. Other vitamins and nutrients found in broccoli include calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc, folic acid, riboflavin, thiamine and many more. A serving of broccoli is like taking a complete multivitamin with your meal!

There are also other essential minerals and nutrients in broccoli that can help prevent cancer. Specifically, the diindolylmethane compound is an extremely potent anticarcinogen. It is derived from indole-3-carbinol, which is present in broccoli. Selenium is another essential nutrient that can be acquired through eating broccoli and may help cancer prevention as well as regulating many key processes in your body. Broccoli also has substances known as isothiocyanates, which help the body manufacture its own cancer defenses and preventive mechanisms in the form of particular enzymes.

There are many ways you can incorporate broccoli into your diet in a healthy fashion. However, boiling your broccoli may reduce its nutritional value. Instead of boiling, you should therefore steam your broccoli. You can also stir fry it using a minimal amount of oil and focusing on seasonings, or you can eat it fresh and raw and use it to complement a healthy vegetable dip.Broccoli is also tasty in a salad.
