Health Benefits of Cooking with Egg Whites and a Delicious Egg White Recipe

Bev Cohen
There are many health benefits to cooking with egg whites. While egg yolks contain fat and cholesterol, egg whites are fat free and contain no cholesterol. To those who need to watch their cholesterol level, egg whites are the way to go. And the amount of calories from one egg white is only approximately 16 calories.

Egg whites are high in protein which is easily digested and absorbed by our bodies. The amount of protein in the egg white from one egg is approximately 3.6 grams. Egg whites also provide essential nutrients and vitamins such as magnesium, iron, zinc, and vitamin B.

Egg whites don't have much flavor. Therefore, they easily absorb the flavor of the food you are cooking with. Egg whites can be substituted for whole eggs so you can gain the health benefits of protein and nutrients and vitamins without the fat and cholesterol contained in egg yolks.

Following is an example of a great recipe that uses egg whites instead of whole eggs. My family thinks it's delicious! I'm not sure they even know that the egg yolks are missing.

Egg White Salad

Ingredients:

5 hard boiled egg whites

1/4 cup chopped celery

1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper

3 tablespoons mayonnaise (low fat if desired)

1 teaspoon creamy dijon mustard

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Salt and pepper to taste

Begin by chopping the egg whites. Add celery and red bell pepper and gently mix all ingredients together. Next add the mayo, mustard, lemon juice, and salt and pepper. Mix well.

This egg white salad is very tasty! You can use it in sandwiches or serve as a salad on a bed of greens. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed!
