Health Benefits and Disease Fighting Potential of Leeks

Why Leeks Are Not Only Flavorful, but Good for Everyone in Your Family

M.G. Hardiman
Years ago, if I wanted inject a little flavor and nutrients into a meal, I would turn to onions or scallions (spring onions). The reasons were simple. These items were (1) easy to find in the supermarket or grocery store; (2) plentiful and cheap; and, (3) familiar. That's right, convenience, price and custom drove my dietary choices for many years. But, that's all changed. There are far more items to choose from that are not only tasty additions to any meal, but good for you and everyone in your family. Among my favorite healthy vegetables today? Leeks.

Disease Fighting Potential of Leeks

Leeks, onions and garlic all belong to a vegetable family called the allium vegetables. Leeks contain flavonoids which do important things like protect blood vessels from wear and tear and other damage over time. As such, you could make the case that leeks promote vascular health. Leeks are also a great source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B folate and antioxidants. These vitamins and nutrients help promote good health and overall well being, fight disease and so much more.

So important are leeks and other allium vegetables in your diet that just one serving of an allium vegetable in your diet each day will do a lot to enhance your overall health and well being. Leeks and other allium vegetables are packed with important vitamins and nutrients vital to cell health and so much more. So, isn't it high time you put leeks on your table?

Cooking Healthy with Leeks

The best way to prepare leeks? I like to slice them thin and sauté them with a pad of butter. But, make sure you cut off the stems, preserving the white of the leeks, and wash thoroughly to make sure you've removed the dirt and sand that can get into the leeks' folds. Of course, before you dine, allow leeks sit for at least 5 minutes after cutting and before cooking to enhance their health advancing qualities. Believe me. Once you start cooking with leeks, you'll begin to feel the difference as a steady diet of allium vegetables is sure to advance your health and wellness.
