Pennyroyal tea is a mint that is part of the Lamiaceae family. It has often been referred to as mosquito plant, tickweed, squaw balm, and pudding grass. The pungent odor and taste are bolder than its relatives, spearmint and peppermint.
The tea is only made from the plant and non-toxic when taken relevantly. With proper consumption, there are numerous health benefits of pennyroyal tea. Still, it should not be ingested for over five days as this could lead to kidney, liver and central nervous system damage.
This tea is most frequently used for the soothing effect on an upset stomach. The health benefits of pennyroyal tea has commonly been exhausted by Native Americans. They believe in its ability to remedy painful menstruation and encourage the menstrual flow. Consequently, it can also cause the uterus to contract and has been used by folk medicine to induce abortion. For this reason, pregnant women must not take pennyroyal tea in any form.
There is some evidence of other health benefits of pennyroyal tea that have been stated. They include; anxiety, asthma, cancer, chest congestion, cough, diarrhea, flatulence, headache, and indigestion. Nonetheless, extreme caution should be employed with this tea as there are side effects that include nausea and dizziness.
To enjoy some of the great benefits of pennyroyal tea, pour boiling water over a teaspoon of the dried herb. Put a top over it, letting it simmer for around 15 minutes and then strain. Honey can be added to sweeten the taste or one could use their favorite sweetener. Do not drink more than 3 cups in one day.
There are diverse health benefits of pennyroyal tea when used in the appropriate amounts. Careful consideration should be appied when deciding to integrate pennyroyal tea in ones diet. If used in the correct way, it can definitely be beneficial to ones health.
