Health Benefits of Pets and Pet Ownership

Jenne Joy
Did you know that owning a pet (whether it be a dog, a cat, or some random non-traditional pet, such as a chinchilla) can actually improve your health? It's true, while you've probably never stopped to think about it, pet ownership (or companionship, as I prefer to call it) has many physical and psychological/emotional benefits. Here are just a few ways that a pet companion can improve your life.

Medical Benefits of Owning a Dog, Cat or Other Pet

Let's start here, since this is likely where many people are the most skeptical. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), pets can actually lower your blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. All of which are good and improve your health, which in turn can improve your overall lifespan.

In fact, studies have shown that dog ownership increases the lifespans and survival rates of individuals who have suffered from heart attacks or various heart health related problems. Holly Nash, a doctor of veterinary medicine at PetEducation.com states that in comparison, "6% of nonpet owners survived

Overall, pets can reduce daily and long-term stress; improve your overall quality of life and maybe even help you live longer.

Emotional, Psychological Benefits of Pet Companionship

In addition to the medical benefits, pet ownership or companionship can also be beneficial to your emotional and psychological health.

Pets provide people with a sense of security. In fact, pet owners are more likely to feel more comfortable in their own home and feel that they are less likely to be a victim of a burglary or other type of crime.

Having an animal companion is also beneficial for those who suffer from depression or loneliness. This is because pet companionship decreases the feelings of isolation or loneliness. Animals do not discriminate based on your skin, hair, age or gender; so there's never any fear of being rejected by a dog or a cat.

Pets can also be beneficial in helping children who are dealing with the loss of a friend or family member; whether it be due to divorce, death or some other uncontrollable issue.

Other Health Benefits of Pet Ownership or Companionship

The benefits certainly do not end there. Pets can also increase your daily level of activity. In short, you'll get more exercise―especially if you have a dog. Dogs need to be walked and you need to get up and walk those dogs, period. So, you're staying healthy, your stress levels are reduced and you're getting more exercise. All because you own a dog (or some other type of pet).

So go on, if you don't own a pet already―well, maybe you should adopt one! (And, if you're serious about pet ownership/companionship―check out your local Humane Society.)
