Health Boosters Your Mother Probably Didn't Tell You About

Lori Piper
One of my children's favorite books when they were toddlers was a book entitled The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups by David Wisniewski. It was all about the secrets adults kept from children as to the reasons for doing things a certain way. It was a favorite bedtime story for them.

We, as adults, do have some zany ideas about things, do we not? Some things are not meant to be hampered with: change is not always welcomed. What if these changes can be good for us... health wise?

Yes, I am going to share with you some new fascinating secrets that will, well not revolutionize the world, but could very well improve your health.

Health booster- do not make your bed

My mother will faint at this one. Not making your bed can actually be beneficial to your health. Dust mites thrive in moist environments. A securely made bed provides them that in spades. By leaving the covers off, fresh air can permeate through to your mattress, in turn killing off more dust mites. Fewer dust mites- less allergies.

Sidebar (Because I am involved with animal rescue after all) - Adopt two pets. Children who live with two or more pets build up a tolerance to dust mites, dust, pet dander, grass, and other allergens that pets can carry in their coats than those residing in petless homes.

Health booster- Scream for more than just ice cream

That old adage, if you cannot think of anything nice to say, then say nothing at all - is not always healthy for us. The song goes, 'if you're happy and you know it clap your hands'... how about if you're angry and you know it... vent it out. By blowing off steam and venting our frustrations, we can lower our blood pressure. Just do not be spiteful.

Health booster- sugar is brain food

Will you be attending your spouse's office Christmas party this year? Do you remember the names of everyone with whom your spouse works? An easy trick to sharpening your memory is to drink a non-diet soda before you go. Sugar activates the hippocampus, the brain's memory center. Okay, so you are not sold on the whole sugar as brain food... try internet surfing. Playing games and Googling can improve our decision-making skills better than watching television can!

Health booster- beer does a body good

Beer is better than water at hydrating a body after a workout. When my friend told me this, I was rather skeptical, but as she purchased the case of beer in the grocery store, she went on to tell me that she has lost fifteen pounds. The beer's carbohydrates replace energy lost whilst exercising. I must say, she does look great.

Health booster- pump up the volume

I do not know how many times growing up my sister and I were told to "turn that music down" as we pulled into our driveway after school. Yet, loud music stimulates the part of our inner ear that responds to rhythm. As we listen to our favorite tunes a little louder than our non-favorite tunes, feel good hormones- endorphins- are released. Loud music can create bliss. Okay... this one I will have to work on as my son's choice of favorite tunes actually hurts my ears to hear. Belting out your favorite tune in the midst of rush hour traffic can create safer, more effective drivers as people are less stressed with all the endorphins they are releasing while singing. Less stress equates less road rage. However, if you have a voice akin mine, you might want to make sure all the windows are rolled up.
