Health Care Reform Supporter

Forcing Insurance Company Accountability

Ranee Wright
There is a lot of false, negative information floating around about health care reform. The fact is, tens of millions of Americans have no health insurance. How many options for health insurance does the average American have? They are much less than the options we have for auto or life insurance. Health insurance companies take advantage of this. Unless you are lucky enough to work for a large corporation that is able to offer affordable insurance and different plan options, your choices are very limited.

I believe we do need more options. Insurance companies are not going to change unless the government forces and enforces that change. President Obama believes that a public option is one way to create more competition and ensure every American has an affordable choice. Once reform begins, insurance companies will have no choice but to make their plans comparable to the new options.

If you live near Geisinger Health System, with hospitals located in Danville and Wilkes-Barre, PA, you may not need more health insurance options. But many more Americans do. President Obama said Geisinger is a model for high quality care at lower than average costs. The President's plan for health care requires greater repair and money than just following the example of health systems like Geisinger, but it is a key ingredient to fixing the system.

I am a supporter of small business owners and the self-employed. For these Americans, and those experiencing lapses in coverage, I believe in Obama's healthcare reform and the need to hold the insurance industry accountable.

I'm still on the fence. However, I will be extremely happy when pre-existing conditions no longer count against us.

I agree, we need reform, but the majority of Americans share this sentiment. I don't support the current resolution, HR3200, though. Good piece.

Rebecca, great point! Thanks for sharing, I love debating and new ideas. I think that would only open more competion but wouldn't chang competitor prices, options or helping those without access to group insurance (available only when working for large co.) coverage.

I agree we need some reforms. However, the solution to needed competition is not having the federal gov't compete with private industry, it is to open up insurance companies across state line, as we currently do with the auto insurance industry. When this happens, there will be ample competition between insurance companies and it won't come with a $900 billion dollar price tag.
