Health Concerns: What We Worry About Most

Henry Lamb
If we could live in a world without illness, there would be no need for medical care or health scientists. Unfortunately, that is something that we will never see as a reality in any given lifetime. Doctors spend there days and hours on end looking for cures and therapies for different illnesses and medical conditions that slow down our everyday lives. But if there is anything that we should be happy about, it is that we are aware of what is afflicting us. Armed with this knowledge, we can take steps forward in finding solutions for our illnesses.

But what are the diseases and conditions that we should be most concerned about? Here is a list of a few of the things that people (mostly women) worry about the most.

Heart Disease

This is the worlds leading killer disease and affects all men and women. But death isn't the real problem since everybody is headed that way. The main concern is that victims to heart disease are getting younger each day. In this day and age, 60 years of age is still too young for anybody to be afflicted with heart disease. Yet most people, at best, are rendered disabled because of heart disease by the age of 60. There are many factors that increase the risk of heart disease. These factors include increasing age, smoking, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, diabetes, obesity, etc. This is a worry that people carry with them every day.

Breast Cancer

Although this disease is accepted as one that more commonly affects women, breast cancer also does affect men in much the same manner as it does their counterparts. This is one of the most common forms of cancer for women, second only to lung cancer. More women fear going to their doctors for screening because of exaggerated reports of the disease being incurable. The reality is that there are many treatments to prevent the cancer from becoming worse than it already is. Breast cancer is hereditary in some cases and it is best to consult a doctor early since it becomes worse with age.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is something that doctors have only recently been treating. In the past, women had to go through various back pains and frailties that can be avoided today. Osteoporosis is a threat to more than 40 million Americans. It is preventable but people really don't take the education on the condition very seriously which is why it is still a concern. Bone mass builds up until the age of 30. After that, the new bone stops developing and so the old bone must be well-maintained so that Osteoporosis is prevented. Smoking, excessive alcohol, low calcium diets, and increasing age are some of the factors that contribute to the condition.

Depression

Depression affects women more than it affects men and there are reports that 12 million women suffer from some form of depression each year. The kind of sustenance needed here is therefore more psychological and not something physical. Sometimes, hormonal changes in the human body can trigger depression. This is not something that can be prevented but there are various therapies that people can go through to soften the blow of depression. This includes nurturing relationships in the family setting to improve emotional relations.

Autoimmune Diseases

This involves a number of disorders that somehow trigger the immune system to attack the body which will destroy or alter the form of some tissues. Some of the serious diseases that fall under this category are lupus, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Almost 75% of all autoimmune diseases occur in women. It is not known what causes these disorders but most doctors suspect genetic and hormonal factors.
