Health Conditions that Can Cause Bad Breath - Part 2

This is a continuation from part 1 of my article '21 health conditions that can cause bad breath', please part 1 first if you have not read it already.

3) Bio-film:

In this condition a thin sticky coating is formed on the tongue and oral mucosa. This coating can grow thick over time if not treated properly and can aggravate the condition seriously. Millions bacterial germs thrive on this coating as anaerobic conditions of this coating provide favorable for bacterial proliferation causing severe bad breath in oral cavity.

4) Gum retraction:

Gum retraction produces gaps between teeth. Due to which food particles get lodged in between teeth and if not cleared regularly causes bad breath.

5) Tartar deposits and Dental plaques:

Tartar and Plaques are deposited usually in the gaps between the teeth and the gum. This provides a shelter for the food debris and bacteria thrive under such conditions causing bad breath.

6) Ulcerative lesions:

Most of the ulcerative lesions in the mouth cause bad breath. Though these lesions are caused by the bacteria or virus infections but certain food allergies and autoimmune disorders is also found be among the main causes for such lesions. Common ulcerative lesions are Apthous, scarlet, Vincent angina etc. A thick white patch is produced on the mucus membrane of mouth and tongue which is called as Leucoplakia, it is also considered as precancerous condition. These cancerous ulcers produce severe bad breath in the mouth.

7) Different diseases of the salivary glands:

Saliva produced in the mouth supplies oxygen to all parts of our oral cavity. They also form aerobic condition in the mouth which eradicates chances of any growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth. If due to some reason saliva is not produced in mouth in sufficient amounts, bacterial activity increases in oral cavity. Under some severe conditions salivary duct is also obstructed by stones and tumors. Such cancerous condition od salivary glands also results in offensive mouth odor.

8) Tonsillitis:

Tonsillitis is the inflammation of tonsils. A pair of tonsils is situated on the lateral wall of oropharynx. Peritonsillar abscess or quinsy also produces bad breath. People suffering with both acute and chronic tonsillitis are also found to suffer with bad breath.

9) Tonsillar plaques:

Serous fluid which is secreted from the folds of tonsil is very offensive, patient feel like some cheesy material in throat. These plaques are formed inside tonsillar crypts which contain innumerable bacteriae. Tonsillectomy provides some relief in such condition.

10) Pharyngitis:

Pharynx is the fibro muscular funnel which forms the upper part of the digest tract. Pharyngitis is the inflammation of the pharynx. It is caused by bacteria or virus. Patients suffer with cough, throat irritation and bad breath under this condition.

11) Dentures:

Denture users suffer with bad smell due to small food debris lodged in between teeth. It is very difficult for people suffering with fixed dentures to properly brush their teeth as a result food particles get deposited in the gaps and cause bad breath.

12) Nose and Ear Lesions:

Bad breath is also seen in people suffering with para nasal sinuses called sinusitis. Bad breath is also common in post nasal dripping which is caused due to proteins in the discharges. Infections of middle ear causing discharge of pus in the throat also cause sever bad smell in the mouth. Bad breath can also emanate from nose if mucus membrane of nose is infected with rhinitis.

13) Diabetes:

Most of the diabetic patients suffer with bad breath. An increased sugar level in the blood is also responsible for bad causing bad breath in the mouth. Anaerobic bacterial growth in oral cavities of diabetic patients is much faster than non diabetic individuals.

14) Fevers:

Every one of us suffers with bad smell in the mouth during fevers. All kinds of fevers usually cause bad breath. People suffering with typhoid report severe bad breath.

15) Dryness in the mouth:

Dry mouth reduces saliva produced in the mouth which favors bacterial activity in the mouth. Regular chewing swallowing keeps producing saliva which keeps a check on bacteria production.
