16) Bedridden patients:

Patients who are bed ridden suffer with offensive breath due to formation of thick coating on the tongue. Regurgitation of food and consuming less water aggravates this condition. Due to less talking aeration in the oral cavity is also reduced and anaerobic bacteria start thriving and multiplying in large numbers. As a result unbearable smell emanated from the mouth of such bedridden patients.

17) Different diseases of stomach and esophagus:

Eructation of gases and food produces offensive smell in the mouth. Different abnormality in the functioning of the lower sphincter allows the food to regurgitate upwards which causes bad breath. Bad breath is found to be very common in people suffering with gastritis or gastric ulcer.

18) Certain Intestinal diseases:

People suffering with ulcerative lesions of intestine like colitis also report bad breath. Other intetinal diseases which result in bad breath are peritonitis, intestinal tuberculosis and malabsorption syndrome.

19) Lung diseases:

Different lung diseases like abscess, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and lung cancer etc also produce bad odor during expiration.

Bad breath is also common in people suffering with different liver diseases like hepatitis, cirrhosi. Gall bladder diseases with causes vomiting can also cause awful odor.

21) Psychiatric patients:

Psychiatric patients usually suffer with poor hygiene and irregular food habits. They also consume less water and usually speak very less as a result they also suffer with bad breath.

Apart from medical conditions listed above bad breath is also found to be very common among people with certain bad habits. People who are habituated to tobacco and smoking are best examples for this. The very smell of tobacco it self is very unpleasant for many people. Tobacco chewing also results in several medical complications like gingivitis, pyorrhea and oral cancer. The eructation of gastric acidity in tobacco chewers also result in severe bad odor.

Similarly smokers always smell bad. Smoking produces lesions in the lungs and in the mouth which causes bad breath. Smoking increases carbon dioxide levels in the oral cavity and reduces oxygen levels. This provides ideal conditions for the harmful bacteria to multiply and cause different oral problems. Smoking also reduces thirst and appetite which causes peptic disease in chain smokers. All these conditions cause bad breath in smokers.

Though it is difficult for people who are suffering with above health conditions are to control bad breath but most of the times it can be avoided or can be kept to a very minimal level by following simple oral health tips. Regular teeth brushing before and after sleep and keeping mouth moist and clean all the time can considerably reduce the chances of getting infected with bad breath.
