Health and Fitness in Oklahoma City

Fitness Clubs, Mayor Cornett's "This City is Going on a Diet"

L.L. Woodard
Whether your intention is to lose some pounds, gain a new physique, or just improve your general health and well-being, Oklahoma City has something for everyone. Mayor Mick Cornett took the bull by its proverbial horns on December 31, 2007, challenging the residents of Oklahoma City to collectively lose 1 million pounds. To date, there are more than 25,000 registered participants in the program who have together lost nearly 300,000 pounds (think 30,000 10 pound bowling balls)--that's an average of slightly less than 12 pounds per registrant.

With obesity a rising problem throughout the U.S., Oklahoma City has a special stake in the problem, being ranked one of the top 10 cities in the nation in obesity. This compelled Mayor Cornett and the city to develop an overall health program to aid its citizens. The mayor has lost 38 pounds since April 2007.

Oklahoma City has developed a website where anyone can go to learn more about Cornett's "This City is Going on a Diet" campaign: http://www.thiscityisgoingonadiet.com/TheProgram/ tabid/54/Default.aspx .

Here the visitor will find information on the program itself, events throughout the area, and resources including recipes, information on medical and/or surgical programs, diet and nutrition, and exercise.
