Parking is abundant and free for shopping center patrons.

Health Food City, a discount nutrition center located in the Hastings Ranch shopping
center in east Pasadena, stocks a little bit of everything health-related, including;
vitamins, minerals, herbs, and nutritional supplements, a large book section, organic
food, and personal toiletries.

Nohemi, one of the helpful, knowledgeable staff there was nice enough to answer my
many questions and health concerns. They have fantastic customer service and you
can even place an order for a free-range turkey for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Martin Chang, the owner, runs a shop that is as much about natural health education,
as it is about supplying top quality, organic, economically priced health food products.
He also has a second store, located in San Gabriel at 140 West Valley Blvd., Suite 102,
San Gabriel. For store hours call 626-288-3498.

Oh Happy Days Health Food Grocery and café
2283 Lake Avenue
Altadena, California 91011
626-797-0383

Store hours:Monday to Friday 11:00 a.m to 6:30 p.m.
Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday they are closed.

Specializing in nutritional information, organic groceries, herbs, and nutritional
supplements, they also prepare fresh vegan meals to eat there or take out.

At Oh Happy Days you'll find organic fruits and vegetables, dried beans, including
kidney, garbanzo bean, fava beans, lentils and black eyed peas; boxed vegetarian chili,
sloppy Joe mix and other prepared foods, as well as canned soups by such natural
favorites as Eden Organic, and Hatch.

For first-time customers your first bowl of soup is free of charge, served up by John
their cook, who knows many of the customers by name. He's happy to prepare
delicious, healthy homemade vegan meals and answer any nutrition questions you may
have.

After sitting down to eat at the long ranch style table, you can get your grocery shopping
done in a few easy steps. Aisles of dried foods, canned foods, and dried herbs await
your perusal. There is a refrigerated section for the organic, fresh vegetables and you
have the areas with teas and sugar substitutes such as brown rice syrup, fructose, date
sugar, dried Stevia and organic honey.

The atmosphere is down home and community oriented, the walls lined with local
artists' paintings, sculptures and artwork, an eclectic mix of various gods and
goddesses, with Homer Simpson right alongside the laughing Buddha.

Their customers are just as organic as their produce, ranging from long haired
hippie-types to Moms in sweatpants, grocery list in hand. With a small but complete
offering of natural body and skin care products rounding out the selection, you can walk
away feeling well fed and knowing your cupboards will be full.

Grass Roots Natural Market and Kitchen
1119 Fair Oaks Avenue
South Pasadena CA 91030

As you walk into Grass Roots Natural Market your nose leads you to the Kitchen, where
the aromas are tantalizingly flavorful. The food is made fresh daily, the changing menu
may consist of delicious, nutritious meals, entrées and sweets. From the home-made
soups, to the chicken bowls, burritos and ample salad bar offerings, you have your
choice of natural, organic breakfasts, lunches and baked goods.

There are tables set up inside and a few outside the Market, allowing you to enjoy the
fine Southern California weather while you sup. The racks of health magazines,
pamphlets and flyers line one wall for the avid readers.

Inside, they have fresh food, dried goods, personal toiletries, and a well rounded book
section geared for the academics as well as the activists.

With a small town feel, the food preparers are friendly and will answer any specific
questions you may have about the food. My favorite dishes are the fresh gazpacho
(seasonal) and the home-made tamales, which are only made a couple times a year.
Call for dates the tamales will be available and remember to order early, they sell out
fast!

This is a really good article. I eat at Oh Happy Days all the time. I am not vegetarian/vegan, but it is just the ticket when I want some "power food." Thanks!

    Regards,
    Jesse
