Health Properties of Foods

The focus on eating healthy has increased in recent years. There are numerous diet plans available for those who are trying to lose weight, lower cholesterol and develop a lifestyle designed around healthy nutrition. Deciding which diet plan is right for you can be overwhelming. People often find it difficult to stick to any particular dietary regimen so it may be best to slowly phase out unhealthy foods by replacing them with foods that are more beneficial to one's health.

The best way to adopt healthier eating habits is to eat foods that are good for you like fruits and vegetables. Vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts are easily included in meals as a healthy side dish. Salads can be eaten as a side dish or as a complete meal. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale are filled with vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, fiber and calcium.

Fruits are another excellent source of nutrients. For example, berries such as blueberries are high in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. They help protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals and are even thought to slow the aging process. Cranberries are well known for their ability to fight urinary tract infections, but this fruit has other healthy properties as well. Cranberries can help raise good cholesterol and prevent the development of kidney stones. There are many healthy benefits to eating various fruits. For instance, grapefruit is an excellent source of Vitamin C whereas grapes contain compounds known as flavanoids that can help prevent heart disease by reducing the clumping of platelets and the formation of blood clots.

Nuts and seeds such as walnuts and sunflower seeds are filled with nutrients also. Cashews are low in fat, high in antioxidants and good for heart health. Almonds help lower cholesterol levels and are also good for the prevention of heart disease. Sunflower seeds have anti-inflammatory properties. They are high in antioxidants and an excellent source of Vitamin E.

Spices such as ginger, turmeric and parsley are also good for your health. Parsley is high in antioxidants and a good source of both Vitamins A and C. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and has been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Ginger is well known for its ability to alleviate nausea and gastrointestinal disorders. These are just a few of the foods that can protect our health naturally.

If you want to eat healthy, you can begin by increasing your consumption of health positive foods such as those mentioned above. There really is some truth to the old adage, "You are what you eat," so eat healthy.
